Bachelor of Engineering vs. Bachelor of Science: Which Degree is Suitable for Whom?
Bachelor of Science. The Bachelor of Science is mainly awarded in the so-called STEM subjects, that is, in mathematics, computer science, natural and engineering sciences, but also in economics, psychology, and health sciences. This already shows that the B.Sc. covers a wide range of topics. Among the engineering programmes I present here, the B.Sc. is rarely found. However, the Bachelor of Science is typical in the field of information science. The degree is recommended for those who want to study across disciplines and, for example, follow a basic engineering degree with a master's in a different field or an MBA.
Bachelor of Engineering. The B.Eng. is the typical degree for a basic engineering programme. Together with the Master of Engineering, the B.Eng. corresponds to the classic degree of Diplom-Ingenieur. Those who want to specialize exclusively in an engineering field through distance learning should choose a programme leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree to potentially pursue a Master of Engineering afterward.

Popular Distance Universities for Engineers Overview
Most universities offering distance learning programmes in engineering and information science are universities of applied sciences. Exceptions: FernUni Hagen and the Technical University of Dresden. Programmes at universities of applied sciences are usually more practice-oriented and tailored to the needs of working professionals.
Here are the most important universities and distance universities offering courses in engineering and IT, including state universities and private universities of applied sciences.
State Universities and Distance Universities
FernUni Hagen: The FernUniversität Hagen is the only distance university in Germany and at the same time the largest university in Germany with over 70,000 students enrolled simultaneously. In the field of information science, the university offers both computer science and business informatics programmes leading to Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Unfortunately, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and electrical engineering cannot be studied at FernUni - however, there is the interdisciplinary Master's programme in Environmental Sciences targeting engineers.
University of Applied Sciences Wismar: The University of Applied Sciences Wismar is a state university of applied sciences in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The university's distance learning programmes are offered through WINGS - Wismar International Graduation Services GmbH, a subsidiary of the university. In addition to business informatics, WINGS mainly offers Master's programmes in architecture, building protection, and industrial engineering.
Verbundstudium: The Institute for Cooperative Studies NRW is a network of all universities of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia offering distance learning programmes. This means that students are enrolled at one of the state universities in NRW. The programmes offered include computer science distance learning programmes, as well as logistics programmes, notably distance learning programmes in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and electrical engineering.
Technical University of Dresden: The Technical University of Dresden is currently the only university in Germany besides FernUni Hagen to offer distance learning programmes in the field of engineering. For many years, TU Dresden has been organizing the distance learning programme in mechanical engineering, both with a Bachelor's and a Diploma degree.
University of Applied Sciences Anhalt: The University of Applied Sciences Anhalt is a university of applied sciences in Saxony-Anhalt, mainly offering on-campus study programmes. However, in recent years, the university has been increasingly offering distance learning programmes, such as the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and the Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, as well as the distance learning programme in mechanical engineering.
Private Universities and Distance Universities
Wilhelm Büchner University: Known as the Private Fernschule Darmstadt, the WBH is a private university of applied sciences and one of the most well-known private universities in the field of technology & computer science. In the WS 2019/2020, a total of 6,188 students were enrolled at the university. Particularly popular: the distance learning programmes in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science.
AKAD University: AKAD University, also known as AKAD University Stuttgart, is a private university of applied sciences and one of the larger private distance universities in Germany. In the WS 2019/2020, a total of 5,241 students were enrolled at the university. In addition to popular computer science distance learning programmes, the university also offers distance learning programmes in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.
IU International University: IU International University is the largest university in Germany. In SS 2023, over 100,000 students were enrolled at the university, with over 20,000 in numerous distance learning programmes. For some time now, the university has also been offering distance learning programmes in architecture and real estate, as well as a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, for example. The university advertises enabling a particularly flexible distance learning approach.
University of Applied Sciences Fresenius: HS Fresenius is one of the largest private universities of applied sciences in Germany. Through its onlineplus department, the university has been offering distance learning programmes for several years. For aspiring engineers, the distance learning programme in industrial engineering may be of interest. Other programmes offered include computer science distance learning programmes and, for example, the Technische Betriebswirtschaft Metallhandel distance learning programme.
Hamburg Distance University: Hamburg FH is a non-profit private university of applied sciences based in Hamburg. In the WS 2019/2020, a total of 11,240 students were enrolled at HFH - making it one of the largest distance universities in Germany. The university offers, among other programmes, the Bachelor's programmes in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and industrial engineering for aspiring engineers.
Diploma Engineer through Distance Learning: Other Opportunities Available
It may be hard to believe, but even after the Bologna Reform, there are still diploma programmes and even distance learning programmes leading to a diploma. This means that those who really want to obtain a classic diploma because they are not convinced by the Bachelor-Master system can also become a Diplom-Ingenieur through distance learning.

You will see that some of the programmes are postgraduate programmes. Therefore, a master's degree is required for these diploma programmes. All other programmes are basic degree programmes.
