Understanding German engineering degrees
The German higher education system offers three types of civil engineering degrees via distance learning. Understanding the differences is important before choosing a programme.
Bachelor of Engineering / Science (B.Eng. / B.Sc.)
The standard first degree, comparable to a bachelor’s programme in any country. Takes 6–8 semesters full-time, 10–14 semesters part-time. Qualifies for entry-level engineering positions, project management, and site supervision. No prior engineering knowledge is required – structural mechanics, construction materials, and building physics are taught from the ground up.
Master of Engineering / Science (M.Eng. / M.Sc.)
An advanced degree for specialisation. German master’s programmes in civil engineering focus on specific fields: structural engineering, fire protection, building physics, geoinformation, or quality management. They require a completed bachelor’s degree and take 3–5 semesters. A master’s degree is the standard qualification for senior engineering roles in Germany.
Diplom-Ingenieur: a uniquely German qualification
The Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) is a traditional German engineering degree that predates the Bologna system. It is formally equivalent to a master’s degree and carries significant prestige in the German construction industry – especially with public authorities and established engineering firms. Only three universities still offer the Dipl.-Ing. in civil engineering via distance learning, all at state institutions with minimal fees. For international students, the Dipl.-Ing. is a distinctive qualification that signals depth and rigour.
Specialisations available in distance learning
The specialisation you choose will shape your career more than the university you attend. German civil engineering distance programmes cover a wide range of fields.
Structural engineering
Structural analysis, reinforced concrete, steel construction, and bridge engineering. The Leibniz University Hannover offers the only specialised M.Sc. in structural engineering (Konstruktiver Ingenieurbau) via distance learning – at just 1,636 EUR.
Construction management
Combines technical knowledge with project management, cost planning, and contract law. The IU offers a dedicated B.A. in Construction Project Management. Wilhelm Büchner University combines engineering and management in a B.Eng. in Business Engineering Construction Management.
Fire protection, building physics, and building preservation
Niche specialisations with strong demand and limited competition. The RPTU Kaiserslautern trains fire protection engineers, the Bauhaus University Weimar and University of Stuttgart offer master’s programmes in building physics, and the University of Wismar has the only distance learning master’s in building preservation (Bautenschutz).
Geoinformation and surveying
GIS, surveying technology, and geodata management for infrastructure projects and urban planning. Anhalt University offers an M.Eng. in Geographic Information Systems, and the HTW Dresden offers a Dipl.-Ing. in Surveying.
Environmental engineering
Combines civil engineering with ecology: waste management, water treatment, contaminated site remediation, and energy-efficient construction. IU offers a B.Eng. in Environmental Engineering, WSH Zwickau a Dipl.-Ing. in Environmental Technology, and University of Stuttgart an M.Sc. in Building Physics and Environmentally Friendly Construction.
What does a civil engineering programme cost?
Costs range from 0 EUR (TU Dresden) to 18,330 EUR (Bauhaus University Weimar, M.Sc. Building Physics). State programmes are dramatically cheaper than private ones – with the same accreditation standards.
Bachelor and Diplom – cost comparison
TU Dresden offers both the B.Sc. and the Dipl.-Ing. in Civil Engineering with zero tuition fees – only semester contributions apply. This is unmatched in the field.

For international applicants
Language: All civil engineering programmes in this category are taught in German. You will need German proficiency at B2 level or higher (typically DSH-2 or TestDaF 4). Technical German includes specialised vocabulary in structural mechanics, building regulations, and construction law – a language preparation course is recommended if you are not confident in academic German.
Visa: Distance learning does not require a student visa. You can study from anywhere in the world. If you are already living in Germany on a work visa, a part-time distance programme does not affect your visa status.
Credential recognition: Foreign school-leaving certificates and degrees need to be evaluated. The anabin database shows whether your qualifications are recognised in Germany. Engineering degrees from accredited international universities are typically accepted, but some institutions may require supplementary coursework.
ECTS: All programmes use the European Credit Transfer System. Bachelor programmes require 180–210 ECTS (6–8 semesters), master’s programmes 60–120 ECTS (3–5 semesters). ECTS credits are recognised across the European Higher Education Area.
Working as an engineer in Germany: Unlike some countries, Germany does not require a professional engineering licence to work as a civil engineer. However, certain activities (e.g. structural verification, fire protection certification) require authorisation from the respective state engineering chamber (Ingenieurkammer). The title “Ingenieur” is legally protected and requires a completed engineering degree.
Study models and duration
Civil engineering requires laboratory work and practical exercises – structural testing, soil analysis, and surveying cannot be fully replaced by online formats. How universities handle this determines the study experience.
Blended learning vs. fully remote
State universities (TU Dresden, HTW Dresden, WSH Zwickau) use blended learning: predominantly self-study with mandatory on-campus sessions for laboratory work, examinations, and practical exercises. TU Dresden, for example, requires physical attendance for labs and exams in Dresden.
Private universities (Wilhelm Büchner University, IU, FHM) offer largely remote programmes. Laboratory work is condensed into block sessions, and IU provides fully online examinations. This format suits students who live abroad or cannot travel regularly to Germany.
Standard duration and realistic timelines
- Bachelor: 6–8 semesters standard, part-time 10–14 semesters (5–7 years). Weekly workload: 15–25 hours.
- Master: 3–5 semesters standard, part-time 4–7 semesters (2–3.5 years). Weekly workload: 15–20 hours.
- Diplom: 8–10 semesters standard, part-time up to 14 semesters. Equivalent to a master’s degree in scope and depth.
