What does AKAD University offer?

AKAD University is a state-recognised private distance university based in Stuttgart. Since its founding in 1959, it has specialised in part-time distance learning programmes and is one of the pioneers of digital learning in Germany. Over 70,000 graduates have already completed a degree at AKAD.

What study programmes are available?

The range of courses includes around 80 state-recognised bachelor's, master's, and MBA programmes. Furthermore, the university offers numerous university certificates, language courses, and further education opportunities, including exam preparations for the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

The study programmes are based on the Bologna system and are nationally and internationally recognised. Starting studies is possible at any time – independent of traditional semester times.
Which subject areas are covered?

AKAD University organises its study offering into four main subject areas:

  • Business & Management: Examples include Business Administration (B.A.), International Management (B.A.), Human Resource Management (B.A.), or Business Psychology (B.Sc.). In the master's field: Business Administration (M.A.), Controlling (M.Sc.), MBA programmes.
  • Engineering & Computer Science: Programmes such as Mechanical Engineering (B.Eng.), Electrical Engineering (B.Eng.), Computer Science (B.Sc.), Digital Engineering (B.Eng.), or Artificial Intelligence (M.Sc.) are part of this area.
  • Health & Social Sciences: Social Work (B.A.), Psychology (B.Sc.), Health Education (B.A.), as well as master's programmes like Digital Health (M.A.) or Health Management (M.A.).
  • Communication & Culture: Technical Translation (B.A.), International Business Communication (B.A.), Global Management and Communication (M.A.), and more.

Who is the study model suitable for?

The study offering is aimed at:

  • Professionals who want to further educate themselves flexibly alongside their job.
  • High school graduates who want to start a degree immediately.
  • Career changers and executives with further education needs.

How does studying at AKAD University work?

Registration is done entirely online. Prospective students choose their desired study programme on the website, upload all necessary documents (e.g., proof of university entrance qualification), and receive access to the online campus shortly after examination.

Admission requirements:

  • For bachelor's programmes: Abitur, Fachhochschulreife, or an equivalent vocational qualification.
  • For master's programmes: A first professional university degree.

Special feature: Under certain conditions, it is possible to study even without the Abitur.

When can you start?

Starting your studies is possible at any time – there are no fixed semester times. Additionally, AKAD offers a 4-week trial phase during which the study can be tested without risk. A withdrawal without costs is possible within this period.
Which study models are available?

AKAD offers three time models that cater to different life realities:

  • Sprint variant: Completion of the bachelor's in 36 months (master's in 24 months). High learning intensity, suitable for ambitious goals in a short time.
  • Standard variant: Bachelor's in 48 months, master's in 36 months. The classic way for professionals with regular time reserves.
  • Stretch variant: Bachelor's in 72 months, master's in 48 months. Ideal for individuals with low weekly availability, for example, due to family or full-time job.

How flexible is the study structure?

Regardless of the chosen model, a free extension of the standard study period is possible – usually by one to two semesters. This allows breaks or delays to be compensated for without additional costs.

How does the learning process work?

After starting, learning takes place entirely online via the virtual campus. All materials are available here:

  • Digital scripts (PDF or eBook)
  • Video lectures and explanatory videos
  • Interactive exercises and self-tests
  • Specialist articles and additional media

For many modules, there are sample exams for preparation. Students determine the order of modules and their individual learning pace themselves.

Are there on-site phases?

Basically, the study is entirely independent of location. There is no mandatory attendance. Exceptions apply only to a few technical courses in which short laboratory phases are necessary – these are held in person.

What examination formats are there at AKAD University?

AKAD University uses various examination formats that can be flexibly integrated into the study routine. Depending on the module, different types of assessments may be required, including exams, essays, or practical tasks.
Which types of exams are offered?

  • 1. Exams (written exams): These are held either in an examination centre or online. AKAD offers monthly face-to-face dates at multiple locations in Germany as well as online exams with video supervision (proctoring). Particularly flexible is the instant online exam, which students can start anytime – 24/7, without fixed dates. This format is usually an open-book exam that allows aids but requires solving demanding application tasks.
  • 2. Essays (Assignments): Many modules replace traditional exams with written assignments. Students work on a subject-related task over several weeks, conduct independent research, and submit the work digitally. Essays promote academic work and are particularly compatible with professional commitments.
  • 3. Open-Book Exams: In these exams, scripts, notes, and other resources are allowed. They are often conducted online and challenge the application and analysis of knowledge – such as in the form of case studies or transfer tasks.
  • 4. Other exam formats: In certain subject areas – such as languages, communication, or technology – oral exams, presentations, or project work can also be part of the assessment.
  • 5. Thesis: Every course concludes with a bachelor's or master's thesis. This is prepared independently (usually with a processing time of 3–6 months) and defended in a colloquium – often via video conference.

The university provides practice material for almost every module: sample exams for realistic preparation, self-tests for knowledge checks, and online seminars with lecturers to clarify open questions.

Who teaches at AKAD University – and how are students supported?

The teaching and support team at AKAD University consists of:

  • Around 23 full-time professors.
  • Approximately 200 lecturers and tutors from practice.

This combination ensures both scientific quality and high practical relevance. Many instructors bring professional experience from companies, research institutions, or consulting projects.

Examples:

  • Prof. Dr. Annette Miller (Business Administration, focus on Artificial Intelligence and business models)
  • Prof. Dr. František Jelenciak (Robotics and automation)

How is student support provided?

Students receive individual support through:

  • Subject-specific support: Each course is accompanied by a tutor or lecturer whom students can contact for content-related questions. Communication takes place via the online campus, e.g., through forums or consultation hours via video chat.
  • Administrative support: The student support team assists with administrative questions – e.g., regarding exam registration or study planning.

The support is organised digitally but with a personal approach. Response times are short, and there is always the possibility to clarify individual questions.
Is there interaction with other students?

AKAD encourages active exchange through:

  • Virtual study groups and forums on the online campus
  • Regional groups for personal meetings in major cities
  • Online events, workshops, or conferences on specialised topics

Thus, despite distance learning, a community is created in which students can support each other.

Despite the spatial distance, many students feel a close connection to the university. The support model combines digital efficiency with personal interaction – a key success factor in distance learning.

How does digital learning work at AKAD University?

The online campus is the central learning platform of the university. Here, students organise their entire studies – from accessing materials to communicating with lecturers and managing exams. Access is platform-independent (PC, tablet, smartphone) and possible around the clock.

What learning materials are available?

Each module offers extensive digital content:

  • Study guides as PDF or e-book
  • Lectures and audio podcasts
  • Interactive web-based training
  • Online libraries with specialist literature and academic articles
  • Self-tests with direct feedback

Students can work on the learning material multimedia, flexibly, and at their own pace.

Many courses include:

  • Live webinars: Online lectures with lecturers, often in the evenings or on weekends
  • Online seminars: Discussion sessions or group work via video conference
  • Recordings: Nearly all live events are made available as video on demand.

If a session is missed, it can easily be caught up.

How does AKAD support the learning process?

The university utilises AI-powered learning systems that adapt to individual progress:

  • Adaptive learning paths
  • Suggestions for review tasks
  • Personalised feedback

In addition, as part of the KI-Kompass programme, students learn how to use modern AI tools sensibly and ethically in studies and work. This concept was awarded as an innovative educational project in 2025.

What other online services are available?

Additional functions can be accessed through the campus:

  • Exam registration and performance overview
  • Management of certificates or leave semesters
  • Reminders for deadlines and submission dates
  • Booking of online consultation hours

An IT support team is available for technical queries. AKAD provides tutorials for orientation on all common processes.
