These are the admission requirements for the Master's programme in Data Science
We offer the Master's programme in Data Science in 2 variants: the shortened 60-ECTS variant lasts 2 semesters in full-time study. The 120 ECTS variant lasts 4 semesters in full-time study.
For the 120-ECTS variant in 4 semesters, the following requirements apply:
- You have a first-degree qualification with a grade of at least "satisfactory".
- If your degree has a different focus, you can be admitted through a master's entrance examination
- In addition, you demonstrate at least 1 year of relevant professional experience that you have gained after completing your first degree.
- You have prior knowledge in the areas of basics of industrial software engineering and statistics. If desired, you can complete corresponding courses at IU before starting your studies.
For the shortened 60-ECTS variant, the following requirements apply:
- You have a first-degree qualification with a grade of at least "satisfactory".
- If your first degree comprises 180 ECTS, you take an additional 30 ECTS of courses and demonstrate at least 1 year of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, you demonstrate at least 2 years of relevant professional experience.
- If your qualification comprises 210 ECTS, you demonstrate at least 1 year of qualified professional experience. You have gained this professional experience after completing your studies.
- If your qualification comprises 240 ECTS, as is often the case with many diploma degrees, you additionally demonstrate 1 year of qualified professional experience alongside the qualification.
- You have prior knowledge in the areas of basics of industrial software engineering and statistics. If desired, you can complete corresponding courses at IU before starting your studies.
- You must have completed the courses "Advanced Mathematics" and "Programming with Python" or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.
If you opt for the English-language variant, you must also demonstrate your English language skills. For example, you can prove your English proficiency through a TOEFL (at least 80 points), IELTS (at least Level 6), a passed Duolingo English test (at least 105 points), a Cambridge certificate (at least grade B overall), or an equivalent qualification. Alternatively, you can take an English course free of charge directly at IU International University.

Study Content & Modules: This is the Study Schedule in the Master Data Science
The master's programme at IU International University is modular. A module typically comprises 5 credit points (ECTS) and concludes with an examination, such as a written assignment or an exam. You complete your master's degree step by step - and even largely determine when you want to complete which module.
In the 60-ECTS option, you can structure your study plan in full-time study as follows:
- 1st Semester: Evaluation and Use Case, Seminar: Current Topics in Data Science, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Advanced Statistics, Case Study: Model Engineering
- 2nd Semester: Elective Module A (Big Data and Software Engineering, Production Methods Industry 4.0 and Automation Technology, Applied Autonomous Driving), Master's Thesis
In the 120-ECTS option, you could structure your curriculum in full-time study like this:
- 1st Semester: Data Science, Advanced Mathematics, Seminar: Data Science and Society, Advanced Statistics, Use Case and Evaluation, Project: Data Science Use Case
- 2nd Semester: Programming with Python, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Big Data Technologies, Elective Subject A
- 3rd Semester: IT Security and Data Protection, Case Study: Model Engineering, Software Engineering for Data Sciences, Elective Subject B, Seminar: Current Topics in Data Science
- 4th Semester: Master's Thesis
In the 120-ECTS option, you choose a total of 2 in-depth subjects according to your interests.
You select your first specialization module from these topics: Data Science Specialist, Technical Project Lead, Data Engineer, Business Analyst.
Your second specialization module can be chosen from these topics: Cognitive Computing, Applied Autonomous Driving, Self Learning Systems, Automation Technology and Internet of Things, Innovate and Change, Management, Global Branding and Sales, Consumer Behaviour and International Marketing, Strategic Financial Management.
Study Concept: This is how the part-time Data Science study at IU works
The online study program in Data Science at IU International University can be adjusted flexibly to fit your life and daily routine as best suits you. For example, you can choose from 3 study models: In the full-time study, you need a total of 2 semesters or 4 semesters, depending on the study option, to complete your master's degree. In part-time study I, you will study for 3 or 6 semesters until graduation. Or you can opt for part-time study II and take 4 or 8 semesters until your master's.
You will receive study materials at IU with each module registration as printed study booklets. All materials are, of course, also available digitally. The IU Interactive Books are innovative learning scripts enriched with video clips and quiz questions at the end of a lesson. Depending on the module, study materials are supplemented with podcasts, live tutorials, and video content in the form of so-called Shortcasts. You can access the IU Interactive Books via the convenient IU Learn app.
In many modules, virtual classes are also offered, allowing you to interact interactively with your fellow students and lecturers.
Especially practical and flexible is the option to take module exams in the form of online exams. You can take an online exam 24/7, 7 days a week - whenever you feel best prepared for the exam in construction design, for example. Additionally, we operate around 40 exam centres in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland where you can also take your exams in the traditional way.
