Who is the Master's programme in Computer Science at IU suitable for?

With your Master's in Computer Science, you could work as a Software Engineer, Security Engineer, or IT Coordinator.

The Master's distance learning course in Computer Science at IU is aimed at those who already have a first degree in Computer Science or a related field and wish to further specialize in areas such as Software Development, IT Security, Artificial Intelligence, and modern IT technologies. Particularly beneficial are those who have professional experience in IT and are looking to take the next step in their careers - such as towards project management, technical leadership, IT architecture, or specialized roles like Machine Learning or Cyber Security. The flexible online study model makes the program ideal for working professionals, career changers, parents, or busy individuals who want to manage their studies independently in terms of time and location.

Admission requirements for the Computer Science Master's at IU

Completed first degree: A first degree with at least 180 ECTS credits in Computer Science or a related field from a state or state-recognized university is required.

First degree in a different field: Those with a degree in a different field can be admitted through an individual assessment. This requires the successful completion of two defined modules within one year of starting the course.

Grade requirement: The final grade in the first degree should be at least "Satisfactory" (up to 3.5). Even with a Bachelor's degree between 3.5 and 4.0, you can be admitted if you can demonstrate relevant Master's-level achievements (at least 40 ECTS) from a comparable Master's programme or present a relevant Master's degree. Certain further educations at DQR7 level (e.g. Postgraduate Diplomas) are also accepted if they meet the required scope.

German language proficiency: Applicants with a foreign degree need a recognized proof of German language proficiency, e.g. through TestDaF (at least 3 points in each section), DSH (DSH1), Telc Deutsch B2, or ÖSD B2. The certificate must not be older than 5 years.

Recognition of previous achievements: Previously acquired ECTS, further education, or relevant work experience in the IT sector can be credited towards the degree. This enables a reduction in the duration of study and a reduction in tuition fees.

Personal requirements: Does the IU Computer Science distance programme suit you?

  • Self-motivation and self-organization: As the study is carried out through distance learning and self-study, you should be good at working independently, planning, and organizing yourself.
  • Interest in innovation and technology: The advanced contents (e.g. artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud technologies) require openness to technical trends and digital tools.
  • Analytical thinking: Mathematical and logical understanding facilitate the study, especially in topics like algorithms or software engineering.
  • Goal-oriented: You want to position yourself for challenging tasks in the IT field - either for a career as a Software Engineer, Security Engineer, IT Coordinator, or as a specialist in emerging fields like Data Science, Web Technologies, or mobile applications.
  • Flexibility: By choosing between full-time and part-time models, you can adapt the study to work, family, or other personal commitments.
