Details
The master's programme "Philosophy - Philosophy in a European Context" at the FernUniversität in Hagen conveys basic concepts, problems, methods and theories of philosophy. Students are enabled to conduct and present their own analyses, as well as to weigh similarities and differences in the European philosophical tradition. A special focus is placed on comparing different European traditions of philosophy, both historical and contemporary in nature.
The programme consists of seven modules and a three-month master's thesis. In the first section "Foundations," 4 modules are studied, including a compulsory and an elective component. In the second section "Philosophy in a European Context," students must study three out of four possible modules. Students develop a philosophical potential for reflection, critique and argumentation, sharpening their awareness of cultural conditioning. They acquire practice-oriented skills of critique and argumentation, as well as the application of philosophical critique and analysis.
The master's programme is accredited by the agency AQAS. The evaluators have praised the focus on comparing European traditions of philosophy and recommend further deepening this aspect within the courses. For future development, it is suggested that the programme places even greater emphasis on the European comparison. Graduates gain qualifications relevant to the job market, including the development of critical thinking and argumentation skills.
