Admission requirements
In order to enroll, you will need a certified copy of a degree in a program with a standard duration of at least six semesters at a university within the scope of the Framework Act on Higher Education, with a good academic record (overall grade or grade for the final thesis of 2.5 or better).
- for Bachelor's programs where Sociology is a major or central subject,
- for Master's or Diploma programs where Sociology is a major or minor subject.
You may also be admitted with a degree from other Bachelor's, Master's, or Diploma programs (overall grade or grade for the final thesis of 2.5 or better) on the condition of presenting proof of sociological performance or examination results at a level of four semester hours per week in the following three areas:
1. basic sociological concepts and sociological thinking,
2. theories and history of sociological theory,
3. quantitative and qualitative methods of empirical social research.<\/p>

The consecutive master's programme "Sociology - Approaches to Contemporary Society" is offered at the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences at the Fern University in Hagen. In this part-time programme, participants can obtain a Master of Arts degree in four semesters. The curriculum focuses on qualitative approaches and modern practice theories of sociology, covering topics such as the flexibilisation and globalization of the economy, social movements, forms of protest, and gender politics.
The target audience for this programme includes graduates of the Bachelor's programme "Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology" at Fern University or similar programmes with at least 60 CP in sociological fields. Additionally, the course is aimed at professionals in journalism, healthcare, social work, as well as teachers and executives seeking analytical reflection of their professional fields. The student body is very heterogeneous, with 80% of students being employed.
The programme aims to enable graduates to conduct professional sociological research and theory work, as well as undertake analytical, advisory, and managerial roles in politics, economics, culture, civil society, education, and administration. Students acquire Master's level qualifications according to the "Qualifications Framework for German Higher Education Degrees". The curriculum includes subject-specific, interdisciplinary, and key competencies, with a focus on qualitative methods.
The accreditation of the master's programme "Sociology - Approaches to Contemporary Society" by the Accreditation Council is valid until 30th September 2029.
