The admission requirements for the course of study usually include the technical college entrance qualification and three years of relevant professional experience or training in a technical or commercial profession. The study requirements for the dual study program are the technical college entrance qualification and a training contract.
It is also possible for the following applicant groups to enter a course of study without the technical college entrance qualification:
Masters and equivalently qualified individuals (e.g. technicians, graduates of two-year technical school programs, IHK business specialists or IHK business administration specialists) can apply for a study placement without an entrance exam. Applicants with a minimum of two years of vocational training and a minimum of three years of work experience in the learned profession can apply for study programs in the relevant field without an entrance exam due to a professionally corresponding vocational training and work experience. Other professionally qualified individuals with a minimum of two years of vocational training and a minimum of three years of professional practice either outside of the training occupation or alternatively in childcare or nursing, where there is no professional correspondence between vocational training, job practice, and course of study, can be admitted through an entrance exam or a trial study.In restricted admission joint degree programs (selection procedure), 2 to 4% of the study places are reserved for masters, equivalently qualified individuals, and applicants in the relevant field.

The part-time and work-integrated dual degree programme in Industrial Engineering is designed for working professionals and trainees in technical or commercial fields who aim to obtain their first professional qualification. The programme is jointly offered by the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences (Hagen campus) and the Bochum University of Applied Sciences, and is held in alternating classes in Hagen and Bochum.
The programme is interdisciplinary in nature, combining expertise from the fields of engineering, business administration, and computer science. Additional key qualifications such as language skills, intercultural competence, project management, moderation and presentation skills, as well as the use of modern information technologies are also taught. This enables graduates to effectively apply the acquired expertise in an international work environment and qualify to contribute to the analysis, coordination, and optimization of business, administrative, and production processes.
Fields of work for Industrial Engineers include the interfaces between technical-engineering and business processes. Examples of typical tasks include technical marketing, production, purchasing, logistics, quality management, and business organization. The practice-oriented and application-based programme is aimed at the professional implementation of acquired knowledge in strategic and operational activities in middle management positions in large companies or medium-sized enterprises.
