Admission requirements
Study starts only in the winter semester. This is a locally restricted course of study with a Numerus Clausus. Applicants must have a Bachelor's, Diploma, or Magister degree. At least 12 months of work experience during the study program are required. Access to the course of study is also possible without a completed first degree if 12 months of work experience in the field of archive administration are proven.Details
The part-time postgraduate Master's programme "Archives" leading to the degree of "Master of Arts" at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam comprises 120 credits and lasts for a standard period of study of 6 semesters. The programme is aimed at career changers who wish to acquire high-level archival qualifications. Special emphasis is placed on practical orientation.
The programme includes modules such as Information and Society, Methods of Archival Science, Archive Typology and History, Archive Management, Archive Indexing, Records Management, Archive Technology, Archive Law/Freedom of Information Acts, Historical Educational Work and Public Relations, Historical Auxiliary Sciences I-III, Administrative History, Digital Archives, Long-Term Archiving, and Project Management. Students are required to both acquire theoretical knowledge and gain practical experiences.
The curriculum is well-structured and builds the individual courses on each other effectively. Students have the opportunity to choose elective modules and specialize in different areas. Assessments are mostly in the form of essays closely related to professional practice. The courses promote competency development and provide students with the opportunity to enhance their skills.
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates are prepared to work in various types of archives, including governmental, municipal, private, and church archives, business, media, party and parliamentary archives, as well as in academic institutions or as independent archivists.
The "Archives" programme at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam is accredited by the Accreditation Council and is offered as a distance learning programme. Applications are only accepted for the winter semester, and programme applications are accepted every two years on odd-numbered years until 30th June.
