zfh Distance Learning in review: Strong support, practical content & small organizational shortcomings

Editorial review by Marcus Schütz, published on 17 July 2025

Many students are very satisfied overall with the zfh distance learning network. The high flexibility of course design and the competent support provided by the teaching staff and course leaders are particularly highlighted. Working professionals study here alongside their careers and appreciate being able to largely determine their own pace of learning.

Support and assistance are considered major strengths of the zfh network. Students report that lecturers and contacts at the universities are easy to reach and respond quickly and helpfully to questions. They feel individually supported, not as just a "number in the system." This personal guidance significantly contributes to the positive study experiences. The online campus is also described as user-friendly: it serves as a central platform for learning materials, organizational information, and communication with lecturers and fellow students. The available online tools support self-study well, and many participants have no trouble adapting to the digital learning format.

The range of courses is perceived as extensive and contemporary - from bachelor's to MBA, the zfh network covers various subject areas, so a suitable course of study can be found for many further education goals. The course content itself is mostly seen as interesting, current, and well-structured. Numerous programs combine theory and practice, which is welcomed by students. For example, seminars link theoretical concepts with practical examples, making the course content vivid and applicable in professional life. Overall, participants feel well supported in their field and often can directly apply what they have learned in their jobs, which benefits their career advancement. Exams can be postponed if needed, significantly easing the compatibility of study, work, and family.

The organizational integration between zfh and the respective universities is perceived by most students as largely functional. The division of tasks - central processes such as enrollment, exam registration, and advice through zfh, while classes and academic support are provided by the universities - offers structure and clarity. However, some report delays or inconsistencies at interfaces, such as in communication or administrative inquiries. Satisfaction partly depends on how efficiently the respective university operates within the network, which can lead to differences in the quality of support. However, overall, the interaction is considered workable.

In addition to numerous positive aspects, students also mention some improvement wishes. Some would like additional or more modern learning materials - such as more video lectures or interactive content - to make self-study more varied. Given the costs of individual modules (especially in the master's area), some expect multimedia content to be expanded. Nonetheless, the value for money is generally rated as good because the tuition fees are moderate to low compared to private providers, and one receives a recognised academic degree for it.

Some organizational processes are described as needing improvement. Some students report that administrative processes such as exam registrations, recognition of previous achievements, or submitting documents can sometimes be somewhat time-consuming. It was also noted that the introduction to certain tools and resources (e.g. library use, reference management programs) could be more detailed or earlier in the course to facilitate the entry for new distance learners. It should also be noted that despite mostly flexible time management, some fixed deadlines must be met - such as on-site phases or online seminars on specified days. Therefore, the study is not entirely independent of location and time, although these deadlines are usually predictable and announced well in advance based on experiences.

Another point is the high workload that distance learning naturally entails. Several students emphasize that the workload is demanding and requires good time management and discipline. Particularly when a lot of material is covered in relatively few on-site days, students need to extensively revise in self-study. Those with prior knowledge in the subject area usually cope well with the pace; however, without prior knowledge, it can be challenging. It is important, therefore, to be aware that a distance learning course alongside work demands a lot of self-initiative - supported by zfh, but still primarily in self-responsibility.

Despite individual points of criticism, the positive feedback prevails significantly. Students praise the opportunity to further their education academically on a part-time basis through the zfh network without having to forgo a high-quality degree. The combination of flexible time management, practical content, and reliable support creates a motivating learning environment for many. Overall, students paint a picture of a competent and student-oriented distance learning provider that particularly opens up attractive educational opportunities for working professionals and those with family commitments.
