The Technical University of Chemnitz (TU Chemnitz) was founded in 1836 as the "Royal School of Trades" and has held the status of a Technical University since 1986. Today, it is a state university in Chemnitz, Saxony, and with around 9,400 students in the winter semester 2022/23, it is the third-largest university in the federal state. The university is headed by Rector Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier. In total, TU Chemnitz employs 2,293 staff, including 157 female and male professors and over 1,500 academic staff. Its annual budget in 2022 amounted to 191.9 million euros, supplemented by third-party funding of 88 million euros.

The university is divided into eight faculties: Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Computer Science, Economics, the Faculty of Arts, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. In addition, TU Chemnitz has numerous central facilities such as the university library, the Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer, and the research cluster MERGE.

TU Chemnitz stands out for its research strength and interdisciplinary collaboration. Special emphasis is placed on lightweight construction, materials, human-technology interaction, and digital technologies. Outstanding projects include the MAIN research center (Materials, Architectures, and Integration of Nanomembranes) and the Collaborative Research Center "Hybrid Societies," which focuses on the interaction between humans and embodied technologies such as robots. The MERGE research center, dedicated to innovative technologies for multifunctional lightweight structures, also has international significance.

The university is deeply connected regionally and internationally. It coordinates the University Alliance Across, a consortium of European universities, and is significantly involved in projects such as the "Smart Rail Connectivity Campus," which promotes the development of technologies for autonomous rail traffic. Furthermore, TU Chemnitz is one of four sites for the national Hydrogen and Mobility Innovation Center.
