The Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU) was founded in 1966 and is now one of the leading universities in Austria. With its four faculties - the Faculty of Social Sciences and Economics (SOWI, since 1966), the Faculty of Law (RE, since 1975), the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (TN, since 1969), and the Faculty of Medicine (MED, since 2014) - as well as six specialized schools, the JKU offers a wide range of study and research opportunities.
The schools include the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT, since 2015), the Linz School of Education (SoE, since 2016), the Business School (since 2019), the Kurt Rothschild School of Economics and Statistics (since 2021), the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH), and the Linz Institute for Transformative Change (LIFT_C).
With around 24,500 students, including 19% international students from 100 different countries, and 176 professors, spread across over 140 institutes and university clinics, the JKU is a vibrant hub for education and research. Annually, about 1,740 English-language courses are offered, and the university has partnerships with more than 150 universities worldwide, including 50 with active exchange programs.
Unique in Austria is the central campus of the JKU, which combines university facilities with recreational amenities. Whether it's canteen parties, beach volleyball, the new fitness centre in the Kepler Hall, or a relaxed café experience at the university pond, the campus provides an inspiring learning and living environment. Since 2021, the JKU MED Campus complements the offer.
The JKU has strategically focused on inter- and transdisciplinarity and plays a leading role in connecting science, society, and the economy. Particularly noteworthy is the development of a bachelor-master system in medical studies - a novelty in Austria - and the focus on innovative study models such as distance learning. The latter is organized by the Centre for Distance Learning Austria, with locations in Linz, Vienna, Bregenz, Saalfelden, and Villach. For over 25 years, the centre has successfully cooperated with the FernUniversität Hagen.
The JKU's strategic priorities until 2030 focus on the further development of its areas of expertise and addressing societal challenges through an even closer integration of research and teaching. In addition to excellent staff and international orientation, its values are characterized by regionalism, innovation, and practical relevance.
With numerous awards such as the international quality management system certification and the certification as a family-friendly university, the JKU confirms its commitment to the highest standards and social responsibility.
