These are the requirements for the Master's in Mechanical Engineering
The Master's distance learning programme in Mechanical Engineering at Wilhelm Büchner University offers an outstanding opportunity for professionals with a background in engineering or natural sciences to deepen their expertise and qualify for top positions in the mechanical engineering industry.
To be admitted to the Master's programme in Mechanical Engineering at Wilhelm Büchner University, the following requirements must be met:
- Academic Qualifications: You need at least a 6-semester academic education in the fields of engineering or natural sciences with at least 180 ECTS. The decision on admission is made by the university's examination board.
- Language Skills: English proficiency at level B2 and German proficiency at level DSH2 are required.
- Credit Transfer: If you have already completed examinations in related study programmes or further education, these may be credited under certain circumstances. The decision on the recognition of previous achievements is also made by the examination board.
The programme is aimed at graduates of a first degree in engineering or natural sciences and also enables career changers to expand their knowledge in this important technological field.
The homogenization phase facilitates entry into the various modules of the programme and allows students to consolidate their basic knowledge and prepare optimally for the challenging content.

These are the study contents and the course of studies
Your Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at WBH is structured in a modular way. You study thematically closed subject areas (modules) to which credit points are assigned according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The number of credit points assigned to each module depends on the scope of the module and the associated workload. All the credit points you earn will be credited to you and you will receive a certificate for them. Your achievements are thus - also internationally - comparable and recognized.
- 1st Semester - Homogenization Phase*: Materials Engineering, Technical Mechanics, Design Theory and Machine Elements I, Design Theory and Machine Elements II, CAD Techniques and Finite Element Simulation, Technical Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Analog Control Engineering, Design Theory and Machine Elements III, Manufacturing Technology, Mathematics III
- 2nd Semester: Advanced Mathematical Methods, Embedded Systems, Advanced Technical Mechanics, Scientific Work and International Project Management, Product Development
- 3rd Semester: Manufacturing and Production in Mechanical Engineering I, Materials in Manufacturing Technology, Quality Management in Product Development, Elective Module, Master's Colloquium
- 4th Semester: Master's Thesis including Colloquium
* From the module catalog of the homogenization phase, 5 modules with a total of 30 cp are to be taken in the preferred sequence shown (depending on previous achievements). For graduates of a first degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least 210 ECTS credit points, the homogenization phase is waived. Details are governed by the examination regulations.
In the elective area, you can choose from these modules:
- Vibration Theory and Machine Dynamics
- Manufacturing and Production in Mechanical Engineering II
- Manufacturing Logistics
- R&D Management
