Requirements for enrollment
The degree program Mechanical Engineering and Management at the University of Applied Sciences Schmalkalden is aimed at students who already have a degree in an engineering program and want to expand their knowledge and career opportunities.
Admission requires a completed technical university or university of applied sciences degree. In addition, you must have relevant professional experience of at least one year.
Alternatively, you can also be admitted with a non-technical university or university of applied sciences degree. In this case, you must have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience and also pass a written admission test in the subjects of mathematics, technical mechanics, and design.

Study Contents, Modules, and Specialisations
The Master's programme Mechanical Engineering and Management combines technical, business management, and legal content with advanced modules in the field of mechanical engineering. Within 5 semesters of the standard period of study, you will acquire 90 ECTS credits.
The study plan is structured as follows:
- 1st Semester: Machine Tools, Innovative Joining Techniques and Manufacturing Processes, Automation Technology, Material Selection and Lightweight Construction
- 2nd Semester: Commercial Law and Occupational Safety, Business Administration, Quality Management
- 3rd Semester: Project and Innovation Management, Product Data Management, Soft Skills
- 4th Semester: Elective Area Product Development or Elective Area Production Technology
- 5th Semester: Master's Thesis
In the Elective Area Product Development, you will complete these modules: Applied Mechanics, Simulation in Product Development and Rapid Technologies, Design and Configuration, Product Management, and Technical Sales.
In the Elective Area Production Technology, you will complete these modules: Manufacturing Process Design and Advanced Topics in Manufacturing Technology, Production Planning and Control, Plant Engineering and Maintenance, Energy Economic Aspects in Production.
On-Site Sessions and Practical Training
What sets apart the distance learning programme at the Schmalkalden University are the intensive on-site sessions and block seminars in Schmalkalden (Thuringia) or at the Dual University Campus Gera-Eisenach in Eisenach. During the on-site phases, you can exchange ideas on the learning material with your fellow students and instructors.
Over the first 4 semesters, you will complete a total of 14 on-site sessions. These sessions are structured to be manageable alongside a profession – the events usually last 2-4 days, including weekends.
If you have earned 180 ECTS in your previous studies, you can obtain the additional 30 ECTS through an accompanying internship – which you can, for example, complete within your own company.
Tuition Fees
At the Schmalkalden University, you pay the tuition fees for the part-time study programme on a semester basis, always at the beginning of the semester. The tuition fees for the Master's in Mechanical Engineering and Management amount to 2560,- Euros per semester.
In addition, there are semester fees of approximately 54,- Euros (without a semester ticket) or approximately 100,- Euros (with a semester ticket).
