The Bachelor’s degree programme in Computer Science (B.Sc.) at FOM University is aimed at working professionals as well as trainees who want to qualify flexibly and practically for demanding IT roles. The target group is especially individuals interested in software development, IT system architecture, data analysis or IT security who wish to obtain a state-recognised university degree alongside their job, training or internship. What admission requirements apply for the application?
The following formal requirements apply for admission to the Bachelor’s degree programme in Computer Science:
- General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or advanced technical college entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife)
- Without (technical) Abitur admission is possible if you
- have completed a vocational training and at least three years of professional experience or
- have completed advanced training such as a specialist business administrator or master craftsman and
- are currently employed (full-time/part-time) or are completing training, an internship, a trainee programme or a voluntary internship
Personal requirements especially include a pronounced analytical-logical thinking ability, interest in technical and digital contexts as well as a willingness for continuous further education. Basic knowledge of mathematics and computer science, self-motivation for self-organised learning and the ability to coordinate work, study and private commitments are advantageous.

In the Computer Science programme at FOM University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management, you will acquire a comprehensive technical foundation for the digital working world. You develop IT systems and learn to design, test and evaluate software solutions for complex use cases. Important focal points in the curriculum are:
- Programming – sound knowledge in multiple programming languages and development environments
- Database Management – construction, administration and optimisation of relational and non-relational databases
- Business Intelligence and Big Data – analysis and interpretation of large data volumes as well as development of data-driven applications
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) – practice-oriented introduction to current AI technologies and their possible applications
- IT Security and Data Protection – securing IT systems as well as handling sensitive data
- Embedded Systems and User Experience (UX) – designing user-friendly software and hardware solutions
- Cloud Computing – planning and management of cloud-based infrastructures
Additional modules and elective compulsory subjects allow individual specialisations, for example in the fields of Innovation & Change Management, Start-up Management & Business Development or SAP and Enterprise Resource Planning. The curriculum is strongly practice-oriented: many modules are based on real case studies, teamwork and direct application of the methods learned.
How is the Computer Science degree at FOM structured?
The course is designed for 7 semesters (3.5 years) with a total scope of 180 ECTS credits. You have the option to choose between different study models:
- Campus Study+ at more than ten FOM locations throughout Germany (e.g. Essen, Munich, Hamburg)
- Digital Live Study – all lectures are live-streamed from modern studios, including interaction with lecturers
You can decide anew each semester which format you wish to study in and flexibly swap individual modules. The time model can be tailored to your personal situation: evening and Saturday study, day or evening study are selectable. Start dates are each in March and September; study breaks are in August as well as from mid to late February.
Special offers complement the studies: through preparation courses and digital starter modules, you can specifically prepare for the course before it begins. Block seminars and creditable international summer or spring schools specifically promote subject and language skills as well as intercultural know-how. If you have already acquired prior achievements (for example through vocational training), you can have these credited and thus save time and tuition fees.

What are the costs and what financing options are available?
The tuition fees for the Bachelor in Computer Science at FOM amount to €475 per month (a total of €20,450 for the standard period of study of 42 months). In addition, there is a one-off examination fee of €500. FOM is a non-profit university – all fees are directly reinvested in teaching, study quality and modern infrastructure.
- Tax deductibility: Tuition fees, examination fees as well as costs for learning materials, travel and work equipment are generally tax-deductible.
- Recognition of prior achievements: Previously acquired professional or academic qualifications can reduce the duration of study and thus the costs.
- Support in emergencies: In case of financial or personal difficulties, a special payment arrangement is possible after individual examination. In addition, you can apply for up to two leave semesters without fees.
