These are the admission requirements for the Master's program in Software Engineering
The Master's in Software Engineering lasts 4 semesters in full-time study, 6-8 semesters in part-time study. A first academic degree with a focus on Computer Science is required, such as a Bachelor's degree or a Diploma. If your first degree has a different focus, you can still enroll via an entrance exam.
The final grade of your first degree should be at least "satisfactory."
Additionally, for admission, you need proof of knowledge in at least one advanced programming language. Specifically accepted languages include: ABAP, Apple Script, C, C++, C#, COBOL, D, Java, JavaScript, PHP, Python, Ruby, Swift, Visual Basic. Not accepted: Assembler, CSS, HTML, or SQL.
For this English-language version, you must also provide evidence of your English language skills*. You can demonstrate your English proficiency, for example, through TOEFL (at least 80 points), IELTS (at least level 6), a passed Duolingo English Test (at least 95 points), a Cambridge Certificate (at least grade B), or an equivalent qualification.
*If you have already completed an English-language primary degree or English is your native language, you do not need to provide separate proof.

Study Contents & Modules: This is the Study Schedule in the Master's Software Engineering
The Master's Software Engineering is aimed at individuals who want to prepare for a career in software development. This degree program provides you with comprehensive knowledge and skills in software development, software management, as well as modern technologies and methods. The target audience consists mainly of students with a basic bachelor's degree in computer science or software development.
Throughout the course, participants deepen their existing knowledge in the areas of process and quality models and learn innovative methods for software development. Through the elective modules, individual emphasis can be placed, for example, in the areas of Data Engineering or Cyber Risk Assessment.
The Master's program at IU International University is modular. A module typically comprises 5 credit points (ECTS) and concludes with an exam, such as an exam or a written assignment. This way, you complete your Master's one step at a time - and even largely determine when you want to complete which module.
In full-time studies, you can structure your study plan as follows, for example:
- 1st Semester: Software Engineering: Software Processes, Advanced Requirements Engineering, Software Architecture, Secure Software Development, Software Testing, Project: Applied Software Engineering
- 2nd Semester: Advanced Research Methods, IT Project Management, IT Governance and Compliance, Seminar: Sustainable Software Engineering, Electives A
- 3rd Semester: Electives B, Electives C
- 4th Semester: Master Thesis
What's special about IU distance learning: the many opportunities to delve into interesting elective modules during your studies. In the Master's, you select a total of 2 specialization modules.
The specialization modules (Electives A and B) are chosen from these topics:
Embedded Systems Engineering, Project: Embedded Systems, Networks and Distributed Systems, Container Orchestration, Data Engineering, Project: Data Engineering, Process Management with Scrum, Project: Corporate Project with Scrum, Product Development, Project: Design Thinking, Quality Management and Sustainability, Cyber Security and Data Protection, Cyber Risk Assessment and Management, Mobile Software Engineering I, Mobile Software Engineering II, Leveraging Data Sources & Data Mining, Project: Leveraging Data Sources & Data Mining, User Interface and Experience, Project: Human Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Project: AI Excellence with Creative Prompting Techniques
Additionally, at the beginning of your studies, decide whether to complete it with an integrated internship in the area of Software Engineering or with a suitable selection of elective modules.
Elective Modules (Electives C)*: Management of IT Services and Architecture, DevOps, Conversation Management and Communication Techniques, Project: Software Process Management
*If you opt for modules from Electives C, you must complete all modules from this area. Hybrid forms between an internship and Electives C are not possible.
Study Concept: This is How the Part-Time Study Software Engineering Works at IU
The online study Software Engineering at IU International University can be adapted flexibly to your life and daily routine as it suits you best. For example, you can choose from 3 study models: In full-time studies, you need a total of 4 semesters, that is, 24 months, until you complete your Master's. In part-time studies I, you study for a total of 6 semesters until completion. Or you opt for part-time studies II and take up to 8 semesters to complete your Master's.
With each module enrollment, you receive study materials at IU as printed study booklets. All materials are also available digitally. The IU Interactive Books are innovative learning scripts enriched with video clips and quiz questions at the end of a lesson. Depending on the module, study materials are supplemented by podcasts, live tutorials, and video content in the form of shortcasts. You access the IU Interactive Books via the convenient IU Learn app.
In many modules, virtual classes are also offered, allowing you to interact interactively with your fellow students and lecturers.
Particularly convenient and flexible is the option to take module exams in the form of online exams. You can take an online exam 7 days a week, around the clock - whenever you feel best prepared for the exam, for example, in building construction. Additionally, we operate about 40 exam centers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where you can also take your exams in-person.
