These are the admission requirements for the Master's program Business Intelligence
We offer the Master's in Business Intelligence in 2 variants: the shortened 60-ECTS variant lasts for 2 semesters in full-time studies. The 120 ECTS variant lasts for 4 semesters in full-time studies.
For the 120 ECTS variant over 4 semesters, these requirements apply:
- You have a first degree in Information Sciences with a final grade of at least "satisfactory".
- If your degree has a different focus, you may be admitted through a master's entrance exam
For the shortened 60-ECTS variant, these requirements apply:
- You have a first degree with a final grade of at least "satisfactory".
- If your first degree is 180 ECTS, you take 30 ECTS worth of courses afterwards and demonstrate at least 1 year of relevant work experience. Alternatively, you demonstrate at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
- If your degree is 210 ECTS, you demonstrate at least 1 year of qualified work experience. This work experience must have been acquired after your studies.
- If your degree is 240 ECTS, which is the case for many diploma degrees, you additionally demonstrate 1 year of qualified work experience alongside the degree.
In addition, you must demonstrate your English language skills. For instance, you can prove your English skills through a TOEFL (at least 80 points), an IELTS (at least Level 6), a passed Duolingo English test (at least 105 points), a Cambridge certificate (at least grade B overall), or an equivalent qualification. Alternatively, you can take a free English course directly at IU International University.

The Master's programme at IU International University is modular. A module typically consists of 5 credits (ECTS) and concludes with an examination, such as an exam or a written assignment. This way, you complete your Master's degree step by step – and even decide largely for yourself when you want to complete which module.
In the 60-ECTS variant, you can structure your study plan in full-time study as follows:
- 1st Semester: Business Intelligence I, Relational and NoSQL Databases, Data Query Languages, Project: Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing Architecture Types, Seminar: Data Warehouse Approaches and Methodologies
- 2nd Semester: Advanced Research Methods, Elective A, Master Thesis
Choose one of the following specialisations: Applied Data Modeling and Reporting, Storage and Data Provisioning in Data Warehouse Systems, Big Data Engineering.
In the 120-ECTS variant, you could structure your curriculum in full-time study as follows:
- 1st Semester: Business Intelligence I, Concepts in Data Management, Corporate Governance of IT, Compliance and Law, Relational and NoSQL Databases, Data Query Languages, Project: Business Intelligence
- 2nd Semester: Seminar: Ethics & Societal Considerations in Data Management, Strategic Management, Data Warehousing Architecture Types, Extract, Transform and Load Technologies, Advanced Research Methods, Seminar: Data Warehouse Approaches and Methodologies
- 3rd Semester: Data Modeling and Reporting, Project: Data Modeling and Reporting, Elective A, Elective B
- 4th Semester: Master Thesis
In the 120-ECTS variant, you choose 2 in-depth subjects according to your interests from these topics: Data Engineer, Big Data Engineering, Big Data, Data Miner, Digital Marketing, Digital Business Models and Change, Technical Project Lead, Digital Business and Entrepreneurship.
Study Concept: How the part-time study Business Intelligence at IU works
The online course Business Intelligence at IU International University can be tailored to fit into your life and daily routine as best suits you. For example, choose one of 3 study models: In the full-time study, you need a total of 2 semesters or 4 semesters to complete the Master's degree, depending on the study variant. In part-time study I, you study for a total of 3 or 6 semesters until graduation. Or choose part-time study II and take 4 or 8 semesters to complete your Master's.
With each module, you will receive study materials at IU as printed study booklets. All materials are of course also available digitally. The IU Interactive Books are innovative study scripts enriched with video clips and quiz questions at the end of a lesson. Depending on the module, the study materials are supplemented by podcasts, live tutorials, and video content in the form of so-called Shortcasts. You can access the IU Interactive Books via the practical Learn-App of IU.
In many modules, virtual classes are also offered, allowing you to interact interactively with your classmates and lecturers.
Particularly convenient and flexible: The option to take module exams in the form of online exams. You can take an online exam 7 days a week, 24 hours a day – whenever you feel best prepared for the exam in, for example, construction. Additionally, we operate about 40 exam centres in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where you can also take your exams in the traditional way.
