Who benefits from the Bachelor in Medical Informatics - and what do you need for it?

The course is suitable if you want to work at the interface between IT and healthcare. Typical profiles: You come from a healthcare profession (e.g. nursing, medical assistants, laboratory) and want to digitize processes, use data securely, and help shape projects in a clinic or practice. Or you already work in administration, controlling, or IT in a hospital or health insurance company and want to sharpen your profile towards eHealth, data integration, and IT security management. The course is also suitable for career changers from the field of computer science or app development who want to move into a regulated environment with clear use cases.

Admission requirements

You can start with or without a high school diploma. There is no numerus clausus. The following paths are possible:

  • General higher education entrance qualification or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification – direct admission, no NC.
  • Without a high school diploma with a subject-specific further education examination – e.g. master craftsmen, business specialists, or comparable qualifications.
  • Without a high school diploma with vocational training – a recognized, completed vocational training plus relevant work experience enable access.

Credit recognition: Further training and education as well as already completed study achievements can be recognized – flat-rate or individually, with up to 90 credits. 40 € will be credited per acknowledged credit.

You can start studying at any time; exams can be taken online or at nationwide locations. Compact seminars usually take place online.

    Personal requirements

Curiosity about technology and enjoyment of understanding medical processes are crucial. You should be willing to systematically familiarize yourself with topics such as programming, data modeling, information security, and healthcare processes. Basic numerical understanding, systematic thinking, and the ability to translate requirements from healthcare into functional IT solutions are helpful.

Distance learning alongside a job and family requires self-organization and perseverance. Plan fixed study windows per week, use short time slots for repetitions, and reserve occasional larger blocks for exams or projects. It is realistic that exam phases will become more intensive – early planning of dates (exams monthly, few online compact seminars) reduces stress. Build support in your daily routine, communicate deadlines within the team, and set priorities. By working continuously, accepting feedback from instructors, and using learning aids such as digital materials or AI learning support strategically, you can keep the workload manageable – and steadily gain competence for your next career step in healthcare.

What do you learn in the Bachelor of Medical Informatics at Euro-FH?

You combine solid computer science with healthcare: You learn to digitize health data and processes, understand clinical workflows, and develop IT solutions securely. The goal is expertise in interfaces for eHealth – from data processing to IT operations in facilities such as clinics, health insurance companies, and research.

The study can be divided into four competency areas:

    • Computer Science and Software Fundamentals: Programming, software development, and system architectures – the foundation to design and implement medical applications and apps.
    • Data, Analytics, and eHealth: Modeling, processing, and visualizing health data; understanding data flows in hospitals and making them usable for research and care.
    • Healthcare and Processes: Understanding structures, clinical workflows, and care processes – with a focus on digitization in healthcare operations.
    • IT Operations, Security, and Management: Planning and managing IT services in facilities, implementing information security, and supporting change processes in health care organizations.

To complement this, you choose one of eight specializations, such as Artificial Intelligence, User Experience & Visualisation, Application & App Development, IT Security Management, Management in the Healthcare Sector, Business & Entrepreneurship, Hospital Management, or Logistics & Process Optimization. This sharpens your profile – technically, organizationally, or entrepreneurially.

The degree programme is geared towards professional orientation: Exams can be scheduled monthly, compact seminars are usually held online. The degree awarded is a Bachelor of Science (180 ECTS); the programme is listed with the Akkreditierungsrat.

How does the distance learning in the Bachelor of Medical Informatics work?

You can start at any time, study for 36 or 48 months with a free extension of 18 or 24 months. You take exams monthly online or at 10 examination centres, and compact seminars are generally held online.

Digital learning with materials and AI support

You will use digital study materials, audio formats, webinars, learning apps, and an online campus. The AI learning companion "KILEA" is available around the clock for questions in your learning routine. This way, you combine self-study, supervised online formats, and continuous feedback.

Testing: online or monthly on site

You can choose between an online exam from home or a presence exam at one of the 10 examination centres. There are exam dates every month on site. If a date is not suitable, you can easily postpone it to the following month – without loss of time.

    Precense Components: few, mostly online

There are only a few compact seminars; these are generally planable online. This keeps the attendance obligation very low and can be combined with shift work or project work.

Time and Flexibility in Everyday Life

The 48-month model is designed for a part-time pace, the 36-month model is tighter. In addition to a full-time job, a practical commitment of 10-15 hours per week is realistic, in the shortened model rather 15-20 hours. The free extension of up to 24 months cushions peaks of stress.

What does the Bachelor of Medical Informatics at Euro-FH cost?

The tuition fee starts at €259 per month. Depending on the time model, the rates may vary; the extension by 18 or 24 months is free of charge. Additional costs mainly arise if you use attendance exams with travel; online exams reduce these expenses.

Important for assessing the total costs:

    • Credit transfer saves money: Recognised prior achievements shorten the study time; you will be credited €40 per recognised credit.
    • Employer Participation: In many companies, subsidies or study time are common – clarify this early with your HR department.
    • Tax Effect: Study costs can usually be claimed as advertising costs or special expenses.

What careers and salaries are possible after the Bachelor of Medical Informatics?

You qualify for IT roles in healthcare – from software development to IT operations in clinics, health insurance companies, medical technology, and research. Entry and career prospects often lie in the upper professional sector, with significant potential towards project and team management.

    • Software Developer in Medical Fields (Apps, HIS modules, interfaces): approx. €50,000-€75,000 gross/year – with experience and specialization, considerably more.
    • Clinical Data Manager or Data Engineer in healthcare: approx. €55,000-€85,000 gross/year – particularly strong with AI or Big Data focus.
    • IT Administrator in Hospital IT (HIS, Infrastructure): approx. €48,000-€70,000 gross/year – advancement to system or team management possible.
    • IT Security Manager in Healthcare (ISMS, Compliance): approx. €60,000-€90,000 gross/year – increasing demand due to CRITIS requirements.
    • eHealth Consultant (Introduction of digital processes, interoperability): approx. €55,000-€90,000 gross/year – depending on project and travel activity.

For leadership and research paths, a consecutive Master's in Medical Informatics, Data Science, IT Management, or Health Economics is recommended. With the interdisciplinary competence set in the Bachelor's, you have a solid foundation for this.

Who is the Bachelor of Medical Informatics suitable for – and who is it not suitable for?

Suitable if you want to combine IT and healthcare and build a recognized foundation part-time. The study is highly digitally organized, with schedulable exams and low attendance requirements – suitable for shift work, project business, or family phases.

    • You work in the healthcare sector and want to shape digitization projects professionally – from HIS to apps.
    • You come from IT and are looking for domain knowledge in healthcare to enter eHealth, medical technology, or research.
    • You need maximum flexibility: monthly exams, online options, and a few, mostly online compact seminars.
    • You want to sharpen your profile – e.g., in AI, IT security, app development, or hospital management.

Not advisable if you are looking for a purely on-campus study with campus life or if you find it difficult to implement without continuous self-motivation. Also, those aiming for a state-regulated license will not find the right path here.

    • You are looking for regular on-site presence learning – here, on-site phases are rare, and mostly online.
    • You cannot dedicate 10-15 hours per week to self-study – even in the 48-month model, this effort is required.
    • You are looking for the lowest possible fees from a state university – private distance learning courses are usually more expensive.
