What formal requirements must you meet?
The following conditions apply for admission to the Bachelor’s degree programme in Business Informatics at FOM University:
- (Technical) school-leaving certificate: General university entrance qualification or specialised university entrance qualification entitle you to enrol directly.
- Admission without a school-leaving certificate is possible if you can prove completed vocational training and at least three years of professional experience or have completed a recognised advanced training qualification (specialist, master craftsman or similar).
- You must be currently employed (full-time, part-time) or be in vocational training, a trainee programme, internship or voluntary service.
- A programme in the “Study into the Job” model is also possible: Here you start without completed vocational training or professional activity and are supported in finding training or employment.
- Already acquired prior achievements (e.g. through previous training or studies) can be credited towards the degree programme and shorten the study period.
In addition to the formal requirements, you should bring personal qualifications that are decisive for study success:
- Interest in IT topics and economic processes: Enthusiasm for digitisation, data analysis and the connection between technology and management.
- Analytical skills: You should be able to think logically, understand complex relationships and quickly familiarise yourself with new digital technologies.
- Self-motivation and organisational talent: The degree programme is organised part-time or in a dual format, so self-organisation, perseverance and time management are particularly important.
- Communication and teamwork skills: Many projects and modules require collaboration in groups and exchange with lecturers as well as fellow students.
- Initial practical experience in the IT or economic field is helpful but not mandatory.
Which skills and content does the Bachelor's degree in Business Informatics convey?
In the Business Informatics course at the FOM University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management, you acquire a broad spectrum of specialised knowledge at the interface between IT and business. The central focus is the understanding of both worlds – you develop knowledge from areas such as computer science, databases, algorithms, cloud computing and IT security as well as from business administration with topics like process management, digital strategies and business development. Typical course contents include:
- Programming and software development: practical handling of modern programming languages and development methods
- IT architectures and infrastructure: construction, administration and optimisation of networks, cloud solutions and business systems
- Data analysis and data management: use of modern tools for data processing and information management
- Business process management and digitalisation trends: analysis, modelling and optimisation of processes in companies
- IT security and data protection: protection of data and systems as well as legal fundamentals
- Project and innovation management: planning and implementation of IT projects, introduction of new technologies and optimisation of structures
You have the option to set individual focal points, for example in Digital Management & Leadership, Innovation & Change Management or Start-up Management & Business Development. The curriculum is complemented by soft skills such as communication and project management competencies. Upon completion, you will have in-depth knowledge enabling you to actively shape digital transformation processes and be capable of moderating complex IT and business contexts.
How is the course schedule and structure of the part-time study organised?
The course is designed for 7 semesters (3.5 years) and offers you great flexibility. You can study part-time in the Campus-Study+ format (with in-person and digital modules at 15 locations) or fully in the Digital Live-Study (with live streamed lectures). The following time models are available:
- Evening and Saturday study
- Block study
- Day study or day and evening study
You have the option to start the course at either the summer semester (March) or winter semester (September). Semester breaks take place in August as well as from mid to late February.
- You can change the study model before each semester – for example, between campus and digital, or flexibly combine individual modules
- There are free preparatory courses and the SmartStart, so you can complete initial basic modules and close knowledge gaps before the start of your studies
- International summer or spring academies at partner universities are optionally possible and creditable
- Recognition of prior achievements (e.g. from training and further education) is possible and shortens the duration of study as well as reduces costs
- You may apply for up to two leave semesters free of charge, for example in special life situations
All modules conclude with exams. At the end, you will earn the state-recognised and internationally accredited Bachelor of Science with 180 ECTS credits.

Investment and financing options for the Business Informatics course
The total cost of the course amounts to 20,450 euros (including a one-time examination fee of 500 euros), payable in 42 monthly instalments of 475 euros. The total price includes all teaching materials, use of digital platforms as well as personal support from the FOM team. Usually, no additional examination fees or hidden costs are incurred.
- Tax deductibility: Tuition fees, specialised literature and related expenses can usually be claimed for tax purposes
- Recognition of prior achievements: Previous training, further education or academic achievements can be credited – this shortens the duration of study and lowers overall costs
- Funding: Beneficial in cases of employer sponsorship, scholarships or an educational loan
- Financial flexibility: In personal emergencies, you can arrange individual payment agreements
- Leave semesters: Up to two fee-free leave semesters are possible if you need to interrupt your studies
