Who is the Architecture (B.A.)* distance learning programme at IU suitable for?
The distance learning Architecture (B.A.)* at IU International University is aimed at anyone wishing to acquire professional skills in the field of architecture - regardless of whether they are aiming for the protected professional title of architect. The target group includes in particular individuals who value a maximum flexible, location and time-independent study programme: These include professionals, career changers, parents, individuals with caregiving responsibilities or residing abroad, as well as school leavers seeking practical architectural knowledge at an academic level. Those who want to work creatively and conceptually, design drafts, and take on responsibility in construction projects will receive solid foundations with this degree – even without professional accreditation. The programme also targets those who wish to delve into future topics such as sustainable construction, new technologies (e.g. Building Information Modeling), and innovative digital working methods in the architectural context.
*Currently not chamber-eligible: Upon completing this degree programme, entry into an architecture list of a state architects' chamber is not possible at this time (therefore no chance of obtaining the right to use the professional title “Architect”). However, the programme is state-accredited and you will acquire all necessary professional competences.
In general, chamber eligibility can only be applied for after completing a four- or five-year architecture degree with a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience. Some regional chambers may require additional qualifications. The responsible architects' chamber of each federal state decides on the registration in the list. Many chambers currently state that they do not accept applicants who have completed their Bachelor's in Architecture via distance learning. Traditional classroom teaching is still generally considered essential. Moreover, complementing with a recognised Master's programme currently does not guarantee admission to an architects' chamber.
What are the formal admission requirements?
With (technical) high school diploma:
- General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or
- Subject-specific higher education entrance qualification or
- Vocational high school diploma (Fachabitur, theoretical and practical part)
With one of these qualifications, you can enrol directly in the programme.
Without (technical) high school diploma:
- Master craftsman's certificate or
- Completed advanced training (e.g. IHK specialist, state-certified business administrator) or
- At least two years of recognised vocational training plus at least three years of full-time work experience (in Germany). Depending on previous education and experience, a trial study may be required before regular matriculation.
International applicants: Foreign school or professional qualifications will be assessed for equivalence. International applicants can also be admitted if their qualifications are duly recognized.
German language proficiency: Proof of German language proficiency at B2 level (e.g. through TestDaF with at least 3 points, DSH-1, Telc B2, or other recognised certificates) - necessary for those who have not completed their degree at a German-speaking school.
No Numerus Clausus: The programme is not restricted (no NC). Applications are possible at any time, and the start of studies is flexible.
Personal requirements and recommended skills
- Creativity and interest in design: Enjoyment of designing and developing spatial concepts, openness to innovative methods and design.
- Self-organisation and self-motivation: The entire programme is conducted digitally through distance learning. Independent work, self-determined time management, and perseverance are important.
- Technical and mathematical understanding: Technical understanding and interest in constructive details are beneficial for subjects like building construction, construction techniques, and CAD.
- Openness to digital tools: Working with CAD programs, digital design and drawing methods, and online collaboration should appeal to you.
- Communication skills: Willingness to collaborate in virtual teams, exchange in digital seminars and projects.
- Interest in sustainability and innovative technologies: The programme focuses on sustainable construction, Building Information Modeling, and new working methods in architecture.
The programme is suitable for those who enjoy conceptual thinking, developing creative solutions, and working with current digital tools - while desiring maximum flexibility in their studies. It is also ideal for individuals who do not require registration in the architects' chamber but aim to take on responsible (partial) tasks in an architectural office, project development, or in the field of construction planning and management.
