If you want to study architecture but don't necessarily need the professional title "Architect," then the Architecture* distance learning course at IU International University (IU) is perfect for you. Here you will learn in digital format how to design the buildings of tomorrow.

The program is currently not chamber-enrolled: You acquire professional competencies (career qualifications) but are not authorized to use the protected professional title Architect (professional qualifications). In order to obtain this professional title in Germany, you need to be listed in an architects' chamber. Chambers typically only consider applications for admission after completing a four- or five-year architecture degree with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience. Some regional chambers require additional qualifications. The responsible architects' chamber of each federal state decides on the admission to the list. Many chambers currently state that they do not accept applicants who have completed their bachelor's degree in architecture through distance learning. Physical attendance is still deemed essential in most cases. Additionally, currently, even an accredited master's program cannot guarantee admission to an architects' chamber.

Nevertheless, the IU Architecture* program has a lot to offer. It is currently the only bachelor's distance learning program in architecture* - nationally recognized, accredited, and practical. We collaborate with internationally successful experts in the architecture industry who support your professional development.

Although the architects' chamber currently does not allow admission and has reservations about competence acquisition through online teaching: The state accreditation demonstrates that our study format is equally suitable for acquiring the necessary competencies. We focus on innovative teaching methods: students learn from physical models, create everything from hand sketches to digital images, interact with each other and with lecturers - but all online.

The lengthy, at least 6-year training as an architect is just one path into the industry. With the IU Architecture* study, many career opportunities are available to you: Whether in an office or in the public sector, you can find and pursue your own focus as a designer, developer of structural details, or in construction projects - even without chamber accreditation. If this aligns with your personal goals, then our distance learning course is the right choice for you.

These Are the Admission Requirements for the Bachelor's in Architecture

You can enroll in the bachelor's distance learning course in Architecture* at IU International University (IU) if you provide us with your high school diploma (general higher education entrance qualification), your technical college entrance qualification (technical college entrance qualification), or a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification.

Alternatively, you can also enroll without a high school diploma. Enrolling in IU's program without a high school diploma is possible under the following conditions:

  • You have successfully completed an advanced training course, for example, a training course to become a certified business economist.
  • Or you have completed a vocational training, for example, training as a business clerk. Following your training, you have worked full time in this profession for at least 3 years. If your training is thematically unrelated to the Architecture* distance learning, you will first complete a trial study before being regularly enrolled.

What's special about IU's distance learning: the many opportunities to deepen your studies with interesting elective modules. In the Bachelor of Architecture*, you choose a total of 2 specialisation modules:

You choose your first specialisation module from these topics: Architectural Design, Conversion and Expansion, Sustainable Building.

You choose your second specialisation module from these topics: Architectural Design, Conversion and Expansion, Sustainable Building, Building Information Modeling, Smart Building, Real Estate Law, Interdisciplinary Field Trip.

Practically: During the Architecture studies*, you complete a total of 5 design projects, such as the project "Concept and Model Design" or an office and industrial building concept. This way, you build your portfolio during the distance learning, which you can use for your applications or to attract clients.

Study Concept: How the part-time Architecture study* works at IU

You can adjust the online Architecture study* at IU International University flexibly to fit your life and daily routine as it suits you best. For example, you choose one of 3 study models: In full-time study, you need a total of 6 semesters, which is 36 months, to complete your bachelor's degree. In part-time study I, you study for 8 semesters until graduation. Or you opt for part-time study II and take up to 12 semesters to complete the bachelor's degree.

With each module you enrol in, you receive study materials as printed study booklets from IU. All materials are also available digitally. The IU Interactive Books are innovative study scripts enriched with video clips and quiz questions at the end of a lesson. Depending on the module, the study materials are supplemented with podcasts, live tutorials, and video content in the form of so-called shortcasts. You can access the IU Interactive Books through the convenient IU Learn app.

In many modules, virtual teaching events are also offered, allowing you to interactively engage with your fellow students and lecturers.

Extremely practical and flexible: The option to take module exams in the form of online exams. You can take an online exam 7 days a week, 24 hours a day - whenever you feel optimally prepared for the exam, for example in Building Construction. Additionally, we operate about 40 exam centres in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland where you can also take your exams in the traditional way on-site.
