Admission to the Master's Distance Learning Programme in Mathematics
Access to the Master of Science in Mathematics programme is granted to those who:
- have successfully completed the Bachelor's examination in a programme that includes mathematics components totaling at least 108 ECTS credits at a university, and
- have not definitively failed the Master's examination in Mathematics at a university within the scope of the Basic Law.
Universities, technical universities, colleges of advanced technology, and universities of applied sciences are considered higher education institutions, but not professional academies. Only accredited Bachelor's degree programmes from professional academies are equivalent to programmes at higher education institutions. However, this does not apply to degree programmes at professional academies where only a Bachelor's certificate has been issued by a foreign university.
The Bachelor's examination under No. 1 is deemed equivalent to the successful completion of a diploma examination in a relevant programme or a teaching examination that includes teaching authorization for secondary level II in mathematics.
The student secretariat is responsible for access to the programme and is your contact for related questions such as the examination of certificates.
Details of the Advanced Mathematics Degree Programme
Enrollment in the Master of Science in Mathematics programme has been possible since the academic year 2003/04. The programme was accredited by the accreditation agency AQAS in Bonn until 30.09.2018. This master's programme is a second university-level qualification in mathematics building upon a bachelor's degree in a mathematical field, upon successful completion of which the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science awards the degree of "Master of Science" ("M.Sc.") in Mathematics.
The master's programme aims to provide students with the necessary specialist knowledge, skills, and methods beyond what they have previously acquired, taking into account the requirements and changes in the professional world, enabling them to engage in scientific work, critically assess scientific findings, and act responsibly.
The master's examination is intended to determine whether the candidate has acquired the in-depth specialist knowledge necessary for professional practice, understands the connections within the discipline, and has the ability to work with basic mathematical techniques using scientific methods. In particular, graduates should be able to address problems from applications to implementation based on solid mathematical knowledge. The legal basis for this programme is the current examination regulations.
The "Master of Science" degree in mathematics qualifies for a doctorate.
The programme can be started in either the winter or summer semester, and full-time students can complete it in four semesters (standard period of study), while the duration extends accordingly for part-time students.
The total workload for the programme is 120 credits according to the ECTS system (European Community Course Credit Transfer System). This programme does not include a minor subject.
Costs (excluding any fees for examinations abroad): under the current fee model, the total cost is approximately 900 pounds, gradually incurred as material fees with course registration. For the costs of individual courses, please refer to the course composition in the online version of the programme and course offerings.
