Admission to the Mathematics Programme
Access requirement for the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics programme at the FernUniversity is a certificate of general or relevant subject-specific university entrance qualification or a certificate recognised as equivalent by a legal regulation or the competent state authority.
On the other hand, those who have definitively not passed the Bachelor examination in Mathematics at a university within the scope of the Basic Law do not generally have access to this programme.
Other access options:
- Students who do not have a valid NRW study qualification can continue their studies at the FernUniversity in Hagen in the same or a similar programme if they have studied at another German university for at least 4 semesters and have earned an average of 20 ECTS points per semester (in total, at least 4 semesters with at least 80 ECTS points). Continuing the studies is also possible after completing a preliminary diploma or an intermediate examination.
- With the Regulation on University Admission for Vocational Qualifications (Berufsbildungshochschulzugangsverordnung) of 8 March 2010, new regulations apply for applicants without a high school diploma who have a vocational qualification. Depending on the type of vocational education, they can either start a bachelor's degree directly OR gain university admission through a trial study or an entrance examination. For more information and further links, please visit the page Information for Vocational Qualification Applicants on the Student Secretariat website.
The examination regulations provide information on further access regulations, such as for highly gifted students as young scholars. The Student Secretariat is responsible for access to the programme and is your contact person for related questions, such as the evaluation of certificates.
Details of Distance Learning Mathematics
Enrollment in the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program has been possible since the academic year 2000/01.
The bachelor's program aims to provide students with the necessary subject-specific knowledge, skills, and methods, taking into account the requirements and changes in the professional world, so that they are enabled to act competently and responsibly. The bachelor's examination is intended to determine whether the candidate has acquired the thorough subject knowledge necessary for professional practice, understands the connections within the subject, and has the ability to work with basic mathematical techniques using scientific methods.
The legal basis for this program is the current examination regulations.
The bachelor's degree represents the first level of the international two-tier Bachelor-Master education model and therefore does not yet entitle to a doctorate. The program can be started in both the winter and summer semesters, and full-time students can complete it after three years of study (standard period of study), while part-time students can extend the duration of study accordingly.
The total workload is 180 credits according to the ECTS system (European Community Course Credit Transfer System). Of these, 30 credits are allocated to the minor subject. The minor subject can be chosen from: Computer Science, Business Administration, or Economics. A change of the minor subject is possible with each re-registration for the next semester. A successfully completed degree (e.g. bachelor's, diploma, master's, medical examination, teaching qualification for secondary level II, etc.) at a university within the scope of the Basic Law in a subject other than mathematics can replace the achievements in the minor subject upon request ("Recognized Minor Subject"). Such a replacement can also be based on intermediate examinations or exam performances in such a program that meet the requirements of minor subjects in terms of nature and scope.
Presence phases: Attendance in Hagen is usually required for the following compulsory tasks: the introductory seminar, the seminar, and the Mathematical Internship (each event usually limited to one weekend), the two oral exams for the elective modules, and the colloquium on the thesis. In addition, one to two oral exams are required when choosing the minor subject of Computer Science and possibly oral repeat exams.
Costs (excluding any fees for exams abroad): according to the current fee model, a total of approximately €1,800, which gradually accumulate with course registration as material fees.
