Admission requirements
For the distance learning programme in Cultural Studies, Bachelor of Arts, at FernUni Hagen, the following admission requirements apply.
You must submit an officially certified copy of a university entrance qualification valid for North Rhine-Westphalia:
- Certificate of general university entrance qualification\/Abitur certificate (the certificate of a completed university degree with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters is recognized as a general university entrance qualification as a replacement, but this does not apply to degrees from universities of public administrations and art colleges)
- or certificate of subject-specific university entrance qualification with study authorizations for one of the subjects Social Sciences\/Sociology, Philosophy, Literature Studies, History
- or comparable foreign educational certificates.
If you do not have the required qualification for studying Cultural Studies, under certain conditions you can start the Bachelor's programme directly, or first begin with a trial study programme or take an entrance examination. Further information for professionally qualified applicants can be found on the FernUni Hagen website.
If you do not have a valid qualification for NRW, you can continue your studies in the same or a comparable degree programme at FernUniversität if you have studied for at least 4 semesters at another German university and have earned an average of 20 ECTS credits per semester (in total at least 4 semesters with at least 80 ECTS credits). Continuing your studies is also possible after completing a preliminary diploma or an intermediate examination.
Also necessary for a successful Cultural Studies programme are good English reading skills and access to an internet-enabled PC. Especially for students who cannot attend on-site seminars, it must be ensured that they can participate in online seminars.
There is no Numerus Clausus (NC).

In the new B.A. "Cultural Studies with a focus on History, Literary Studies, Philosophy", each of the three subjects involved offers six modules. In addition, there is an elective area with four modules.
During the course of the programme, a total of 11 modules are to be studied:
Students choose one subject as a major, in which they study all six modules. In a second subject, they study at least three modules, including Introduction Module 1 (in Philosophy: 1 or 2). The choice of any remaining two modules is free.
The B.A. thesis is written in the selected major subject.
Structure of the Modules
Each module comprises 450 working hours. Of these, 240 hours are covered by taking and working through courses (= 8 contact hours per week; 1 contact hour equals 30 hours of independent work). 120 hours are allocated for preparing and taking the accompanying examination, and 90 hours are available for independent study of the module's content or for attending a face-to-face or online seminar related to this module.
15 ECTS points (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) are awarded for successfully completing each module.
Face-to-Face and Online Seminars
During the programme, students must attend at least 3 face-to-face seminars, two of which must be related to the chosen major subject. Online seminars are offered on a case-by-case basis and serve as a valuable addition.
