The distance learning course is specifically aimed at trained and state-recognised physiotherapists who wish to expand their professional experience towards leading, specialised or scientific activities. The course is suitable for employees in inpatient and outpatient therapy settings, for example if you want to complement your clinical practice with scientific skills, project management and business administration knowledge. If you work independently and want to qualify for roles in management, research or further education within physiotherapy, this course is tailored to your needs.
What Formal Requirements Must You Meet?
In order to enrol in the Bachelor distance learning course in Physiotherapy at Hochschule Fresenius, you need to provide the following proofs:
- Completed, state-recognised training as a physiotherapist (proof by professional certificate).
- Additionally, one of the following higher education entrance qualifications:
- General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur)
- Subject-specific higher education entrance qualification
- OR: at least 2 years of relevant professional experience after completing the training
Your completed physiotherapy training will be credited with 90 credit points towards the course. There is no Numerus Clausus (NC). A (subject-specific) Abitur is advantageous but not mandatory if the required professional experience is provided.
As a personal requirement, you should have the ability for self-directed learning, possess organisational talent and self-motivation, and be willing to engage with scientific methods and business administration issues. Since a large part of the modules is based on scientific deepening, evidence-based practice and interdisciplinary collaboration, an interest in scientific work and willingness for reflection and further development are important. Due to the part-time format, you especially need discipline and time management in order to accommodate about 30 hours of study per week.
What content and skills does the Physiotherapy distance learning course convey?
In the Bachelor's distance learning programme in Physiotherapy at Hochschule Fresenius, you deepen your knowledge in key physiotherapy subject areas and expand your practical skills with scientifically based competencies. The course builds directly on your training as a state-recognised physiotherapist – 90 ECTS credits from your training are recognised. In the programme, you will focus particularly on the following areas:
- Physiotherapeutic diagnostics and treatment: Taking patient history, creating individual treatment plans, and selecting evidence-based therapies for different age groups (children, adults, seniors)
- Scientific and empirical work: Basics of scientific work, method training, and applications in physiotherapy research
- Health promotion and prevention: Developing and evaluating preventive measures in everyday therapeutic practice
- Ethical aspects in therapy and research: Reflective handling of value conflicts and ethical issues in healthcare
- Project management and interdisciplinarity: Organisation of therapeutic processes, cooperation in interdisciplinary teams, and leading own projects
- Data-based documentation: Structured data collection, standardised documentation of treatment outcomes, as well as patient training for self-management
Optionally, you can specialise in business administration topics through elective modules:
- Business administration: Basics of management and economic contexts in healthcare
- Health economics: Economic frameworks of therapeutic practice and financing in the healthcare system
Due to the strong practical relevance and focus on scientific foundations, you will develop the ability to analyse physiotherapeutic questions on an evidence-based basis, to conceptually advance them, and to actively contribute to innovative solutions in healthcare.
How is the study process and organisation structured?
The course is specially designed for working professionals and already trained physiotherapists. You can start monthly at any time and flexibly adjust the duration of study to 3 to 6 semesters – a total of 180 ECTS credits are acquired, with 90 ECTS credits credited from your training.
- Digital learning environment: All learning content is provided on a modern online campus (studynet). You gain access to Studymags (digital study booklets), video lectures, e-books, and extensive online libraries.
- Self-directed learning: You plan your learning pace independently and can work on modules in parallel or in a flexible order. Learning is complemented by regular online seminars and support from personal study coaches.
- Alternative examination formats: The course has hardly any classic written exams. Instead, learning objectives are mostly demonstrated through term papers, project work, (online) presentations, and open-book exams. Many exams can be taken online 24/7 on demand.
- Optional specialisations: In the electives, you can choose between Introduction to Business Administration or Health Economics to expand your competencies specifically.
- Tailored to professional practice: The course is possible completely without mandatory attendance. For a few examination formats, travel to examination centres may be necessary – however, most can be completed independently of location.
- Degree completion: The course concludes with a bachelor thesis (accredited by ACQUIN from 2024–2029) and the title Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.).
Support is also provided digitally by experienced professors and lecturers with practical relevance. You will have a fixed contact person in study coaches throughout your studies, can participate in group work, and benefit from online consultation hours.
