This programme targets practicing speech therapists who want to formalise and broaden their expertise while continuing to work. Typical profiles include: (1) a state-recognised speech therapist (Logopädin/Logopäde) trained in Germany, aiming for roles in practice management, quality assurance or teaching; (2) a German-trained therapist now living abroad who needs a fully online, flexible path to a bachelor’s degree; (3) an experienced clinician in a clinic or private practice in Germany seeking stronger skills in evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning and health system literacy. The degree is German-taught and designed for those with a completed German vocational qualification in speech therapy.
Admission requirements
Entry is selective and builds on a German professional qualification. You start directly in semester 4 with 90 ECTS recognised.
- Completed, state-recognised vocational training as a speech therapist (Logopädin/Logopäde) in Germany is mandatory. Foreign speech therapy trainings cannot be recognised for admission.
- With school-leaving certificate: General or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or advanced technical college entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife) plus the German speech therapy training.
- Without Abitur: Qualified German speech therapy training plus at least three years of full-time, post-qualification work experience as a speech therapist.
- International school diplomas are accepted subject to an equivalence check (e.g. IB or other secondary certificates assessed against German requirements).
- Language for study: German. If your prior education was not in German, you must present one of these certificates (typically not older than five years): TestDaF (TND3, minimum 3 in all parts), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2, or ÖSD B2. Comparable B2 (CEFR) proofs may be accepted case-by-case.
- Study start is possible year-round; the programme is fully online with numerous virtual teaching events.
Personal requirements
Remote study rewards consistency. You will need solid self-organisation, reliable time blocking, and the stamina to work through academic texts and research methods in German. Expect around 30 hours per week in the 18-month track; about 18–22 hours (24 months) or 12–16 hours (36 months). Plan additional time during assessment periods. Strong digital habits help: stable internet, comfort with video sessions, online exams, and literature search. You should be confident communicating in German at B2 level or above for seminars, readings and written work. What will you study in the Speech therapy (B.Sc.) at IU International University?
This programme is taught in German. If you are not a native speaker, you will need a recognised German certificate at least at B2 level (e.g. TestDaF with 3 in all parts, DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2 or ÖSD B2). You study as a Fernstudium (distance learning) at a German Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences), with state approval for distance courses by the ZFU (see below).
You enter directly into the second half of the degree: 90 ECTS from your professional training are recognised, so you start at semester 4 and complete the academic part in three semesters. Across the final 90 ECTS you build four core competence blocks and finish with your Bachelor’s thesis (B.Sc., 180 ECTS in total).
Health systems and management: You place therapy in its system context with modules such as Health economics, Framework conditions of the health market and Quality management in healthcare. You learn to read reimbursement logic, legal frameworks and quality indicators for decision-making in clinics and practices.
Scientific methods and evidence: You sharpen your research literacy through Introduction to academic work (health/psychology), qualitative and quantitative research methods, and Evidence-based practice. You learn how to appraise studies, extract outcomes and translate them into everyday therapy.
Clinical reasoning and interprofessional work: Clinical reasoning and Collaborative work train case analysis, hypothesis testing and team coordination. You practise decision pathways that combine patient values, external evidence and your clinical expertise.
Clinical foundations and reflective practice: Neuro- and pathophysiology in therapy provides the medical basis. Reflective practice modules apply and scrutinise diagnostics and interventions in language development, voice and fluency, and neurological language and speech disorders. These units develop your profile as a “reflective practitioner”.
Electives (10 ECTS) let you steer your path, for example: Didactics for therapists, Management for therapists, Prevention and health, Clinical specialisation for speech therapists, Sign language, Digitalisation in therapy and care, or Work-oriented professional counselling. The programme concludes with your Bachelor’s thesis.
How does the Speech therapy distance programme work?
You study fully online with rolling admission and start “anytime”. Teaching happens on IU’s virtual campus with numerous live online classes. Exams are offered online worldwide; no on-site attendance in Germany is required. The course is ZFU-approved under admission number 1113220c. A purely remote degree does not require a visa.
Teaching language and proof
Teaching and assessment are in German. For admission to the German-taught track, typical certificates accepted are TestDaF (min. 3 in all parts), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2 or ÖSD B2. Plan your preparation time if you are currently below B2.
Learning format and study materials
This is a Fernstudium (distance learning). You use structured scripts, videos, self-tests and the online library on the digital campus. Numerous virtual teaching events support pacing and peer exchange, but remain location-independent. Coaching and online tools help you keep track alongside work.
Exams from outside Germany
Written exams can be taken 24/7 via online proctoring. Alternative test centre sittings are available if you prefer in-person exams. Depending on the module, you will also submit portfolios, presentations or written assignments online.
On-site sessions in Germany
There are no mandatory on-site days in Germany. Practical reflection components are mapped online; your professional baseline comes from your completed speech therapy training.
Workload, time models and time zones
Standard weekly workload in the full-speed model is about 30 hours. You choose between 18, 24 or 36 months for the final 90 ECTS. Live sessions are scheduled in German CET/CEST; recordings and multiple time slots help if you live in other time zones. A free extension of up to 12 months buffers busy periods.
What does the Speech therapy cost?
Tuition depends on the time model and is paid in monthly instalments in euros. Over the recommended durations for the final three semesters, typical totals are: 18 months at €399 per month (about €7,182 in total), 24 months at €344 per month (about €8,256 in total), or 36 months at €259 per month (about €9,324 in total). Longer durations reduce the monthly burden but increase the total.
There are no compulsory travel costs because exams can be taken online; if you choose a physical test centre, plan for any travel or local fees. Learning materials on the online campus are included. A free extension of up to 12 months does not add extra tuition. You pay in monthly euro instalments; if you pay from abroad, your bank or card provider may charge currency conversion or transfer fees.
What careers and recognition does the Speech therapy offer?
You earn a Bachelor of Science with 180 ECTS credits under the Bologna framework, making credit volume and level internationally comparable. IU International University is a state-recognised German university of applied sciences; the programme is accredited under Germany’s system accreditation until 30 September 2028. ZFU approval confirms the quality and legality of this distance-learning course for the German market.
Abroad, the academic degree is generally recognised as a B.Sc. from Germany; however, professional licensure for speech and language therapy is regulated nationally. This degree does not on its own grant a licence to practise in other countries. Always check local regulator requirements if you plan to work outside Germany.

- You already hold a completed, state-recognised speech therapy qualification and seek an academic B.Sc. on top.
- You want to deepen evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning and quality management to handle complex cases.
- You aim for roles in practice leadership, service development, teaching or prevention—and value elective focus options.
- You need maximum flexibility: online learning, 24/7 online exams, no compulsory on-site days, rolling start dates.
- You prefer a clear timeline for the final 90 ECTS: 18, 24 or 36 months with a possible free extension.
There are also clear exclusion points. These protect you from a mismatch before you invest time and money.
- You do not speak German at B2 level or higher. The entire programme, exams and materials are in German.
- You do not have a completed, Germany-recognised speech therapy qualification. The degree does not confer initial professional licensure.
- You expect lab work, on-campus practicals or mandatory residencies in Germany. The programme runs fully online.
- You need this B.Sc. to grant a licence to practise in another country. Professional recognition abroad depends on national regulators and is not automatic.
