Admission requirements

The prerequisite for admission is a first academic degree from a state or state-recognized university in Social Work, Social Pedagogy, Social Work, or a comparable degree in an educational program such as Educational Sciences or Pedagogy, which is equivalent to a workload of at least 180 Credit Points according to the European Credit Transfer System. Comparable qualifications may also be accepted or additional requirements may be imposed. A preparatory semester to acquire the necessary qualifications is possible, in which modules of the Bachelor's degree program in Social Work are taken.

The Master's programme Social Work at HFH · Hamburger Fern-Hochschule offers a comprehensive academic further education in a dynamic professional field. This Master's programme is aimed at graduates of a Bachelor's programme in Social Work or a related pedagogical field who wish to deepen their knowledge and bring it up to date. The part-time study programme spans five semesters, including one semester for the Master's thesis, and comprises 120 ECTS credits.

The programme addresses key topics and challenges in social work, including support for refugees, trauma pedagogy, social inequality, radicalization, democracy, sexual diversity and gender, as well as digital counselling. These topics are illustrated through practical examples from various fields of social work, such as child and youth welfare or social geriatric care.

To tailor their studies to their individual profile, students choose one of three specializations: trauma pedagogy, flight and migration, personnel and project management, or health. These specializations enable students to work in specific areas of social activity, such as migration counselling or in the HR departments of large organizations.
