All about the Practical Phase in the Bachelor of Social Work at AKAD University

The practical phase is a central component of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Social Work (B.A.) at AKAD University. It is designed as an integrated practical study semester and provides thorough insights into the professional field of social work.

The practical phase comprises 800 hours, which corresponds to approximately 100 full-time days. During this time, students spend their placement in a self-chosen field of social work under the supervision of a professionally qualified person.

Objectives of the Practical Phase

The aim of the practical phase is to give students confidence in their own abilities, strengths and professional interests. Through practical engagement, they develop a clear professional identity. The content of the practical phase includes:

  • Introspection and self-reflection
  • Transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice
  • Engagement with the living environments of clients
  • Reflection on the role and relevance of social work
  • Reflection on methods and competencies in the professional context

The practical phase promotes not only professional qualifications but also the personal development of the students.

Requirements for the Practical Phase

Before starting the practical phase, the modules of the first three semesters must be completed or at least 90 ECTS credits must have been earned. Independent registration for the practical phase is not possible; it is activated by the Examination Office.
Proof and documentation

Successful completion of the practical phase is accomplished by writing a learning portfolio. This contains a systematic reflection on the practical experiences, complemented by theoretical references. The title and structure of the portfolio are coordinated together with a supervising member of the teaching staff. The processing time is eight months from the date of application.

Recognition of Previously Achieved Credits

If prior professional practical experience exists, it can be recognised partially upon application. In such cases, a complete practical report is also required to document and reflect on the learning outcomes.
Placement in the study programme

The practical phase is scheduled in the fourth semester. It forms the bridge between theoretical training and the start of independent academic engagement, which culminates in the bachelor thesis.
