The internet-based, part-time distance learning programme Childhood and Social Sciences M.A. (MAKS) is aimed at graduates of a first professional qualifying university degree as well as professionally qualified individuals who may be admitted to the master's programme through an aptitude test. This further education distance learning programme offers the opportunity to deepen previously acquired knowledge at master's level and to qualify for demanding professional activities in managerial, planning, and/or research positions as well as for advanced methodological practice in the field of childhood.
The master's programme is divided into four semesters and comprises 90 ECTS credits. Study contents in the 1st semester include: Discourses in Social Sciences, Discourses in Childhood Studies, Ethics and Research Methodology. Contents of the 2nd-4th semesters include course units depending on the chosen specialization and the master's thesis. Specializations to choose from include Management & Consultation, Child Protection & Diagnostics, Movement & Health, Trauma Pedagogy (optional), Specialist for Social Space Work in Daycare Centres (optional), and Educational Consultancy for Daycare Facilities (optional).
The programme is modular in structure and combines supervised self-study phases with theory-practice transfer and presence times. The master's thesis is created in the final semester. The standard period of study is four semesters. This degree programme qualifies graduates for advanced positions in the field of childhood studies, such as roles in non-profit and public organizations as well as in the private sector. The master's degree also provides access to higher civil service and the right to pursue a doctorate in accordance with the respective university's doctoral regulations.
