The Master's distance learning programme "Advanced Professional Studies" (MAPS) represents the second stage of the consecutive bachelor's and master's degree programme offered by the educational and social science departments of the participating universities. It offers graduates of a first professional qualification university degree in the field of social work and education the opportunity to further develop their previously acquired professional skills at master's level and thus qualify for challenging professional tasks in leading positions, the senior civil service, or an academic career.
This Master's programme is a collaborative project of five universities. All Master's programmes have a common core structure focusing on the competencies central to a Master's degree in social work (reflection and analysis skills, research skills, leadership, organizational and networking skills). This area is further expanded through the teaching of specific action skills in the alternatively selectable university-specific study focal points/fields of work.

The Master's programme is offered as a distance learning course and can be completed in parallel with professional activities. The standard period of study is five semesters, thus totaling 2.5 years. Due to its part-time structure and blended learning approach, MAPS offers working students a flexible study programme where face-to-face phases, tutor-supported online study phases, and self-study phases complement each other. The face-to-face phases are organized as block events and take place over approximately 4 to 5 two-day events per semester at the respective study location. During the online study phases, students are in regular contact with the supervising university lecturers and receive organizational support. A PC with internet access is a requirement for this programme.
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates are awarded the internationally recognised academic title Master of Arts (M.A.) Advanced Professional Studies.
