Requirements

With your Master's degree in Business Education, you work, for example, in personnel development, in training and further education, or as a vocational school teacher

You already have a first business-related university degree with at least 180 ECTS. If you have a first non-business-related university degree, you can start the Master's programme after completing the certificate course Economic Basics. This provides you with the economic foundations required for the Master's programme.

You also have at least 12 months of relevant professional experience as well as English skills at the B2 level of the Cambridge Certificate. If you have not taken a test, you can also prove your English skills in a telephone interview with the programme management.

For access to the preparatory service for teaching at vocational schools, special requirements of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Baden-Württemberg apply. Applicants who aim for lateral entry into the preparatory service for the higher education career path at vocational schools in Baden-Württemberg must meet the following requirements:

  • You have completed a business administration first degree.
  • After completing the Master's programme, you must demonstrate a minimum number of ECTS in the subjects Business Administration (BWL) and Economics (VWL). In particular, in the subject Economics, you can make up ECTS credits at the Allensbach University.
  • In order to be admitted to the teacher training phase, you must also prove one year of professional experience. Additionally, you must achieve a certain grade point average in the Master's programme in Business Education.

How is your degree structured?

The interdisciplinary Master’s programme in Business Education combines advanced economic knowledge, skills and competences with advanced pedagogical expertise.

1st semester: Core modules of Business Education and Economics

  • Scientific Work and Research in Business Education (5 ECTS)
  • Teaching and Learning I: Designing learning situations didactically and sequencing lessons (10 ECTS)
  • International Management and Intercultural Competence (5 ECTS)
  • Corporate Finance (5 ECTS)
  • International Economics (5 ECTS)

In the first semester, you will initially be introduced to scientific work and the specifics of research in business education. In the extensive module Teaching and Learning I, you will then acquire the key competences for lesson design in different learning situations. Two business management modules and one economics module complete the first semester, which thus comprises 50% business education and 50% economics content.

2nd semester: Core modules of Business Education and Economics, Start of specialisation

  • Understanding Vocational Education Processes at the Steering Level (5 ECTS)
  • Organising Quality in Educational Institutions (5 ECTS)
  • Exploring, Designing and Reflecting on Educational Practice (5 ECTS)
  • Business and Corporate Ethics (5 ECTS)
  • Specialisation Module 1 (10 ECTS)

In the second semester, you will deal with the fundamental interrelations of the vocational education system and learn approaches to quality management in educational institutions. An important component of the programme is the teaching placement, which is also scheduled for this semester but can be completed later. During your placement, you will observe lessons for one week but also teach at least one lesson yourself. The second semester also increasingly covers important issues of business and corporate ethics and includes the first module of your elective subject, which gives your degree a specific profile.

3rd semester: Core modules of Business Education and Economics, Specialisation modules

  • Teaching and Learning II: Developing learning environments with digital media (5 ECTS)
  • Understanding and Assessing Current Challenges in Business Education (5 ECTS)
  • International Accounting (5 ECTS)
  • Specialisation Module 2 (10 ECTS)
  • Seminar paper in the elective field (5 ECTS)

The third semester focuses on the highly topical issue of digitalisation in teaching with the module Teaching and Learning II, which will continue to gain importance. Another compulsory business education module addresses current challenges in business education, including digitalisation as well as heterogeneity/diversity. The business management module International Accounting is also included. The emphasis of the third semester is your elective subject, represented by one content module and a seminar paper.

4th semester: Core modules of Business Education and Economics, Master’s thesis

  • Research-oriented development of learning environments (5 ECTS)
  • Leadership (5 ECTS)
  • Master’s thesis with colloquium (20 ECTS)

In the fourth semester, you will focus on the research-oriented design of learning environments based on a real task from the area of vocational schools. In addition, the Leadership module teaches the leadership competences that are essential for many professional fields.

The Master’s thesis, in which you independently work on a complex topic from the field of economics or business education using scientific methods, concludes your studies. You will present your Master’s thesis at the end in a colloquium (online).
