The Central State Office for Distance Learning (ZFU) has approved the course Health and Nursing Education under the number 1120621. Who this Master’s suits – and what you need to apply
This online Master is a fit if you already work in healthcare and want to move into teaching, curriculum work or education management. Typical profiles include: a registered nurse or allied health professional planning to become a teacher at a vocational school; a clinical educator or practice instructor aiming for formal pedagogical qualification and leadership in a training centre; a hospital learning & development specialist who needs evidence-based didactics to scale in-house training. You can study fully remotely; for the mandatory practice project you must be able to teach and evaluate lessons in a real health education setting.
Admission requirements
For the 120 ECTS Master of Arts in Health and Nursing Education you need a relevant first degree and sufficient German. Key points at a glance:
- A completed Bachelor’s degree (at least 180 ECTS) in health or nursing education, or in health, therapy or nursing sciences, from a state or state-recognised university
- Minimum final grade: “satisfactory”. If lower, admission is possible with additional evidence (e.g. at least 40 ECTS from a relevant Master/MBA, a completed relevant Master/MBA, or recognised advanced qualifications at EQF/DQR level 7 amounting to at least 40 ECTS)
- Educational science background: at least 35 ECTS in education/pedagogy from prior studies. If missing, you can make up the shortfall via bridging courses during the Master
- If your first degree is in another field: possible entry via a Master entrance exam by successfully completing two specified modules within 12 months (these are fully credited)
- International qualifications are accepted if issued by state or state-recognised institutions; degree content and level must match the requirements above
- German proficiency (programme taught in German): accepted proofs include TestDaF (min. 3 in all parts), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2, or ÖSD B2. Certificates should be current (typically not older than five years)
- Secondary school certificates (Abitur) are not required for Master’s admission
Personal requirements
Distance study rewards consistency. Plan with a realistic weekly workload of about 20–40 hours depending on your time model (48, 36 or 24 months). You need solid self-organisation, perseverance over four semesters, and the ability to work through academic German materials (reading, writing and presenting at B2 level or higher). Reliable internet, quiet study time across time zones, and access to a suitable pedagogical practice setting are essential to complete the compulsory project (planning, delivering and evaluating lessons, designing assessments). If you enjoy structured work, can manage overlapping peaks at work and study, and are willing to apply research methods to your teaching, you will handle the demands well.
What will you study in the Health and Nursing Education (M.A.) at IU International University?
This programme is taught in German. If you apply from abroad, you must prove German at least at B2 level (accepted: TestDaF with 3 in all parts, DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2, or ÖSD B2). You study as a Fernstudium (distance learning) at a German Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences) with state approval by the ZFU (German authority for distance learning).
Pädagogik and didactics in health professions. You build a foundation in Learning and Development Theories, Didactics in Health Professions, and Adult Education Pedagogy. Communication and Conflict Management trains you to guide learners, moderate groups and handle difficult situations in class and clinical settings.
Education management and leadership. You prepare for school and programme leadership with Leadership and Education Management in Initial, Continuing and Further Education. Evidence-Based Practice and Process Design in Healthcare connects curriculum work with quality assurance and organisational development in health schools and training units.
Research and public health lens. Research Methodology equips you to design and evaluate teaching and learning scientifically. Health Psychology and Sociology plus Public Health embed your pedagogy in prevention, population health and the realities of healthcare systems.
Practice, projects and thesis. A mandatory Practice Project: Pedagogical Action Fields lets you teach lessons, design assessments, evaluate learning processes and apply pedagogical diagnostics in a real setting you choose. The programme concludes with the Master’s thesis (30 ECTS).
Electives to specialise. You shape your profile with two electives, for example in Digitalisation in Medicine and Nursing, Virtual Support of Development Processes, Coaching, Project Management, Health Care Management, Employment Law, Organisational and Personnel Development or Diversity Management.
How does the Health and Nursing Education distance programme work?
You study fully online with digital study materials, a virtual campus and many live online classes. Exams can be taken 24/7 online from outside Germany. There are no mandatory on-site days in Germany; the practice project is completed in your own educational field. ZFU approval number: 1120621. A purely remote programme requires no visa.
Teaching language and certificates
The teaching language is German. For admission to the German-taught track you need a recognised B2 certificate, e.g. TestDaF (min. 3 in all parts), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2 or ÖSD B2. All live sessions, exams and written work are in German.
Learning format and materials
This is a Fernstudium (distance learning): self-paced online study with interactive virtual seminars, recorded content, scripts, exercises and an online library. The IU online campus and learning assistant support planning and revision. You study at a Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences), practice-oriented and application-focused.
Exams from abroad
Most module exams are offered as online-proctored exams around the clock. Alternative assessment types (presentations, projects, papers) are submitted digitally. You can therefore complete all assessments from outside Germany.
On-site presence in Germany
There are no compulsory on-campus days. The only practical requirement is the Practice Project, which you complete in a pedagogical field you organise yourself (e.g. teaching unit at a health school, clinical education department) in your country or region.
Workload, time models and time zones
Choose between 24, 36 or 48 months. Typical weekly workload: about 40 hours (24 months), 25 hours (36 months), or 20 hours (48 months). Live online sessions follow German time (CET/CEST), with recordings usually available for later review.
What does the Health and Nursing Education (M.A.) cost?
Fees are charged in monthly instalments in euros. As guidance, the undiscounted standard models are: €499 per month over 24 months (about €11,976 in total), €379 per month over 36 months (about €13,644 in total), or €299 per month over 48 months (about €14,352 in total). A cost-free extension of up to 12 months helps you avoid extra tuition if you need more time.
There are no mandatory travel costs because the programme runs fully online; optional costs may arise for specialist literature or if you choose to sit an exam at a physical test centre. Payments are due in euros; when paying from abroad, consider exchange rates and any bank transfer or card fees from your provider.
If your schedule is tight and you prefer lower monthly costs, the 48-month model spreads fees over a longer period. If you aim to minimise the total, the 24-month model is typically the most economical overall.
What careers and recognition does the Health and Nursing Education (M.A.) offer?
You graduate with a Master of Arts, 120 ECTS under the Bologna framework. IU is a state-recognised German university of applied sciences; the programme is accredited in Germany (Akkreditierungsrat system) and ZFU-approved for distance learning. For international readers, this means an EQF-compatible master’s that is broadly understood in credential evaluations outside Germany.

- You plan to teach or design curricula in health professions education and want formal pedagogical credentials.
- You are aiming for leadership in schools or education departments and need education management and leadership know-how.
- You prefer a fully remote master’s with online exams and no mandatory campus days.
- You value a recognised European degree (120 ECTS) from a state-recognised German university of applied sciences.
There are also clear cases where this programme will not fit. Read the points below carefully before you apply from abroad.
- You do not speak German at B2 level: all teaching, exams and the thesis are in German, and a German certificate is required.
- You need a direct pathway to a regulated school-teacher licence in your country (e.g. civil-service teaching posts): additional state-specific requirements typically apply and are not covered automatically.
- You cannot organise a suitable practice setting: the mandatory practice project requires access to a real teaching/education environment in healthcare.
- You are looking for advanced clinical nursing training: this is a pedagogy and education management master’s, not a clinical specialisation.
