Details

The bachelor's degree programme "Physician Assistant (B.Sc.)" qualifies healthcare professionals for an extended role in medical care. The aim of the programme is to prepare students for tasks that can be performed under medical delegation. This significantly broadens their professional scope of duties, especially in times of physician shortage and due to technological developments such as telemedicine.

The course combines medical-theoretical content with intensive practical training. Subjects include, among others, medical fundamentals, clinical and emergency medicine, pharmacology, legal aspects, as well as topics from the healthcare sector. A special feature is the practical training in the fifth semester, which can take place in partner institutions or with the employer. Additionally, specialisations such as "Primary Care" or "Specialist Inpatient and Outpatient Care" can be chosen.

The lectures are predominantly held online, supplemented by on-site sessions and practical exercises in Heidelberg. Examinations are mostly taken online or at an examination centre. Only modules with practical final exams require on-site examinations. The curriculum consists of self-study phases, online seminars and transfer phases in professional practice.

Learning objectives include acquiring sound medical knowledge, developing practical skills for patient care, the ability to independently perform physician-delegated tasks, as well as understanding processes and structures in the healthcare system. The programme prepares for a responsible role within the medical team and provides a solid foundation for advanced master's degree programmes.

The degree awarded is a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), completed with a bachelor thesis and a colloquium. The programme is accredited by the Accreditation Council.
