These are the requirements for the Bachelor's in Medical Informatics
For the B.Sc. Medical Informatics at Wilhelm Bücher University, there are various access options:
Access Option No. 1: You have the general higher education entrance qualification (A-levels), the subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, or the subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification.
Access Option No. 2: You have a university admission qualification recognized as equivalent by the Hessian Ministry of Culture (e.g. a master's degree or a qualification as a state-certified technician).
Access Option No. 3: Studying as a guest student: You start your guest studies at our university without the mentioned three accesses and after 2 semesters of performance, you take the university entrance examination (HZP). To do this, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- You have completed a recognized apprenticeship of at least two years in a field related to the desired course of study according to the Vocational Training Act, the Crafts Code, or regulations by federal or state law.
- You have subsequently worked for at least two years in a professional capacity in a field related to the desired course of study.
If you are aiming for a course of study that is not related to the completed training or professional activity, then the knowledge acquired through training and professional activity must be expanded or deepened through qualified further education with a minimum of 400 hours in a field related to the desired course of study.
After successfully passing the university entrance examination (HZP), we will change your status from guest student to regular student.

Your Bachelor's degree programme in Medical Informatics at the WBH is structurally modular. You will study thematically closed subject areas (modules) to which credit points are assigned according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The number of credit points assigned to each module depends on the scope of the module and the associated workload. All credit points you achieve will be credited to you, and you will receive a certificate. Your achievements are thus - also internationally - comparable and recognised.
The course of studies is structured as follows:
- 1st Semester: Fundamentals of Computer Science, Basics of Object-Oriented Programming, Basics of Medicine, Mathematical Foundations for Computer Scientists, Introductory Project for Computer Scientists
- 2nd Semester: Operating Systems and Computer Architecture, Medical Information Systems, Advanced Mathematics, Basics of Business Administration and Legal Foundations
- 3rd Semester: Software Engineering, Digitalization of the Healthcare System, Information Technology, Project Management and Scientific Work
- 4th Semester: Database Systems, Specialization Studies (Part 1), Health System and Law, Elective Catalog for Cross-Disciplinary Competences
- 5th Semester: Distributed Information Processing, Specialization Studies (Part 2), IT Security Management, Communication and Leadership, Project Work
- 6th Semester: Elective Area Computer Science, Specialization Studies (Part 3), Elective Area Medicine/Health, Thesis + Colloquium
At the beginning or during the course of your studies, you will also choose one of these specializations: Ethics & Procedures in Healthcare, Introduction to and Application of Artificial Intelligence, Basics of Innovation and Technology Management.
You will choose Elective Module I from these topics: Intercultural Communication, Social Media, IT Management and Law, Basics of Innovation and Technology Management, Controlling and Quality Management.
You will choose Elective Module II from these topics: Introduction to App Development, Big Data & Data Science, Design of Interactive and Collaborative Systems, Introduction to and Application of Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Programming, Design of Digital Transformation.
You will choose Elective Module III from these topics: Ethics & Procedures in Healthcare, Quality and Controlling in Healthcare, Public Health and Prevention, Health, Chronic Diseases and Aging, Secure IT Processes in Healthcare (unless covered by specialization), Consulting in Healthcare (unless covered by specialization).
