Who is the distance learning course in Medical Biotechnology suitable for?

The distance learning course is aimed at individuals who have already completed training in medical-technical, biological or chemical assistant professions and wish to expand their skills at the interface of medicine, laboratory analytics and quality management. The degree programme is particularly suitable for professionals who want to qualify alongside their career for responsible tasks in the field of laboratory diagnostics, data and quality management in medical or biotechnological laboratories. The target group includes (veterinary) medical-technical assistants, biological-technical assistants, pharmaceutical-technical assistants as well as laboratory technicians from the biological or chemical fields. The practical and work-integrated model especially appeals to practitioners who want to combine study and work.

What formal requirements do you need?

For admission, you need one of the following university entrance qualifications:

  • General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or advanced technical college entrance qualification
  • Professional university entrance qualification in accordance with §65 HochSchG: This requires – at least an overall grade of 3.0 in the vocational qualification, completed relevant vocational training (see below), at least three years of relevant professional experience and a recommendation from the employer

Additionally required is a successfully completed apprenticeship in one of the following professions or a related occupation:

  • (Veterinary) medical-technical assistant
  • Biological-technical assistant
  • Pharmaceutical-technical assistant
  • Biology laboratory technician
  • Chemistry laboratory technician

It is possible to credit individual modules for graduates of relevant vocational training occupations in accordance with the training and examination regulations for technical assistants in medicine. For the work-integrated variant, an existing employment relationship with a cooperation agreement is also a prerequisite; for the practice-integrated model, the cooperation agreement with a suitable company is sufficient.

Personally, you should bring analytical thinking skills, an interest in scientific and medical issues, as well as organisational talent for self-study. Independence, reliability and the willingness to continuously update your knowledge are essential – as is the ability to combine practical experience with theoretical learning. Teamwork and communication skills are advantageous, as regular exchange with company supervisors and lecturers is planned.

The subject-specific skills imparted by the Bachelor’s degree in Medical Biotechnology

In the Medical Biotechnology programme, you acquire advanced knowledge at the interface of medicine, analytics, and quality management. The curriculum focuses on medical laboratory diagnostics, data management, and quality assurance to prepare you optimally for modern, digitally networked laboratory structures. The central content includes:

  • Mathematics and chemistry as a basis for scientific work
  • Micro- and cell biology, immunology, molecular biology
  • Fundamentals of computer science, biochemistry, physics
  • Laboratory diagnostics, bioanalytics, medical informatics
  • Hygiene, medical conditions, and medical documentation
  • Quality management, healthcare law, IT security
  • Elective modules such as pharmacology, toxicology, personalised medicine, tissue engineering, genetic engineering procedures, specialised English

You train practical skills through extensive practical projects and practical phases that begin in the third semester. You regularly document the practical phases, linking your theoretical knowledge with operational processes. After successfully completing selected modules, you can additionally obtain certificates in medical laboratory analytics, data management, and quality management.

How does the distance learning degree in Medical Biotechnology work?

The programme is structured as a blended learning model that combines self-study, online learning modules, and practical phases. You work independently with study briefs and multimedia learning materials and use a learning platform for academic support from the instructors.
