Bachelor's Programs in Direct Comparison

The most common degree for programs in health management is the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). Such a bachelor's program usually lasts 6 semesters in full-time studies. Bachelor's programs are suitable for recent high school graduates, but also for those who, for example, have completed or are completing a nursing education and want to give their healthcare career a boost while working. Graduates work, for example, in mid-level management positions at healthcare facilities.

For the bachelor's program, you should plan to spend about 20-30 hours per week if you want to study full-time. Most of the bachelor's programs we present here can also be studied part-time. Thus, it usually takes 8-12 semesters to complete the bachelor's program.

Particularly flexible: The study programs at Fresenius University offer 3 time models, enabling the completion of the bachelor's program in 6 semesters, 8 semesters, or 12 semesters.

The following table directly compares the bachelor's distance study programs:

Master's Programs and Degrees

When it comes to master's programs in the field of health sciences, the range of possible degrees is much broader than for bachelor's programs. Master's programs are primarily aimed at healthcare professionals with an initial university degree who want to advance their careers, for example in the pharmaceutical industry or hospital management.

The master's distance study programs typically last an average of 4 semesters but can often be taken as a part-time option with a study duration of up to 8 semesters.

Possible master's degrees that can be obtained through distance learning:

Master of Science. The Master of Science is a typical degree in the natural sciences. Corresponding study programs are less practical and more research-oriented. You can obtain a Master of Science, for example, with the distance program in Nursing Science/Nursing Management at Ernst Abbe University Jena.

Master of Arts. The Master of Arts is the classic among master's degrees and guarantees a more broad-based education. You can obtain a Master of Arts, for example, in the Health Management distance study programs at SRH Distance University and Fresenius University, or in the distance program in Prevention, Sports Therapy and Health Management at IST University.

Master of Health Management and Master of Health Economics. The Master degrees Master of Health Management (MaHM) and Master of Health Economics are very specialized master's degrees that can currently only be obtained through distance learning at APOLLON University. These degrees are similar to the Master of Health Administration, a degree common in the Anglican university system.

Master of Business Administration. The MBA is the classic among management and business-focused master's degrees. You can currently obtain an MBA in Health Management through Wismar University, the International University Bad Honnef, Potsdam University, and the German University for Prevention and Health Management.

What Does a Distance Study in Health Economics Cost?

Most of the universities I present here are private universities. This means that the study programs are generally more practice-oriented and potentially more career-promoting than programs at state universities. On the other hand, the tuition fees are higher than those of comparable programs at state universities of applied sciences.

Most universities allow the semester fees to be paid monthly. Monthly contributions average between 150 and 300 euros. The following table compares the total costs of a large part of the distance study programs we present here:

Dual Studies: Education or Job and Health Management Studies Simultaneously

Dual study programs are particularly suitable for practitioners who, for example, want to combine their nursing education with a university program. Distance study programs make dual studies particularly efficient because the cumbersome transition between work at the training facility and university times is eliminated. Instead, students learn from home and can therefore concentrate much better on the study contents.

Distance learning also allows you to study quasi dually: quasi dual means that you study while working. This way, you can stay in your job and, for example, complete a bachelor's or master's program after work or on weekends.

Quasi dual you can attend any distance study program that we present above. However, there are 2 universities that also offer purely dual distance study programs: IST University and German University for Prevention and Health Management.

  • Dual Bachelor Health Management at DHfPG: The program is designed as a dual study program with a combination of company training and a distance study program with compact on-site phases. The distance study program lasts a total of 7 semesters. Only those who can present a training contract alongside their high school diploma, etc., are admitted.
  • Dual Bachelor Management in Healthcare at IST University: The program is dual as well. Those who want to study dual and do not yet have a training position can get support from IST University to find a suitable training company. Those who do not want to study dual can enroll with a high school diploma, without a training contract.

Distance Learning in Medicine: What Are the Options?

There is no pure distance learning degree in Medicine in Germany. Those who want to study Medicine should do so at a state university or at a private university. On the other hand, there is now a wide range of study programs for those who do not want to undergo the rigors of a medical degree but still want to study a program close to the healthcare professions. Apart from the programs in the field of health management that we present above, here are some interesting distance study programs at a glance. More of them here: Distance learning medicine in Germany: All study programs at a glance.
