These are the requirements for the Bachelor's in Communication Design
For the B.A. Communication Design at Wilhelm Bücher Hochschule, there are various access options:
Access option No. 1: You have the general qualification for university entrance (Abitur), the subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, or the subject-bound higher education entrance qualification.
Access option No. 2: You have a university entrance qualification recognised as equivalent by the Hessian Ministry of Culture (e.g. a master's degree or a qualification as a certified technician).
Access option No. 3: Studying as a guest auditor: You start your guest studies at our university without the three mentioned accesses and after 2 semesters of performance, you take the university entrance examination (HZP). To do this, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- You have completed a minimum two-year vocational training regulated by the Vocational Training Act, the Crafts Code, or federal or state law in a field related to the desired course of study.
- You have subsequently worked for a minimum of two years full-time in a field related to the desired course of study.
If you aim to study a subject that is not related to the completed training or professional activity, the knowledge acquired through training and professional experience must be expanded or deepened by qualified further training with a duration of at least 400 hours in a field related to the desired course of study.
After successfully passing the university entrance examination (HZP), we will change your status from guest auditor to regular student.

This is the course content and course structure
Your Bachelor's degree course in Communication Design at WBH is structured in modules. You will study thematically self-contained subject areas (modules) to which credit points are assigned according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The number of credit points assigned to each module depends on the scope of the module and the associated workload. All credit points you earn will be credited to you and you will receive a certificate. Your achievements are comparable and recognized internationally.
The course is structured as follows:
- 1st Semester: Introduction and orientation project, drawing techniques, media-technical basics and design theory, scientific work, creative methods
- 2nd Semester: Intercultural communication, law and profession, design history and theory, agile project management, storyboarding and narration
- 3rd Semester: Fundamentals of economics and marketing, semiotics and aesthetics, software for communication design 1, printing technology and editorial design, typography and design basics
- 4th Semester: Software for communication design 2, project: digital design, project: brand and identity, brand management and brand theory, seminar
- 5th Semester: Specialisation module 1, project work, practical vocational phase
- 6th Semester: Specialisation module 2, specialisation project, elective area, bachelor thesis and colloquium
At the beginning or during the course of your studies, you can also choose one of these specialisations: Commercial Art and Advertising Design, Motion and UI/UX Design, Entrepreneurship.
The elective module: Digital Ethics, Fundamentals of Sustainability or Human-Centered Design.
