Admission Requirements

General Higher Education Entrance Qualification: You can enroll in the program if you have the Abitur, subject-restricted university entrance qualification, or university of applied sciences entrance qualification. For certain types of qualifications, such as the Waldorf graduation or vocational colleges in Baden-Württemberg, a recognition certificate may be required.

Admission without Abitur: Access is also possible through the following paths:

  • Successfully completed advanced training (e.g. master craftsman's certificate, IHK specialist qualification).
  • Vocational training (at least two years) plus at least three years of professional experience (full-time). Depending on the thematic proximity to product design, a trial study may be required.

Artistic aptitude test: You must pass an artistic aptitude test according to § 68(2) ThürHG before starting your studies. This consists of:

  • Portfolio in the form of a coherent presentation (up to 10 images with explanatory captions as a PDF)
  • Short abstract (discussion of the task and the chosen solution approach; half to one DIN A4 page)
  • Motivation letter (2-3 sentences about your study motivation)

The test serves as a practical test to determine if the program is suitable for you, and it assesses fundamental design skills and your interest in product design.

Language requirements (for international prospective students): For the German-language program, a German proficiency at least at the B2 level (CEFR) is required, to be proven, for example, by TestDaF (at least 3 points in all subareas), DSH 1, Telc B2, or ÖSD B2. The proof must generally not be older than five years.

No Numerus Clausus (NC): Admission is possible regardless of the Abitur grade.

Trial Month: You can test the IU distance learning program for one month without obligation. Fees only apply if you decide to continue.
