Requirements for Enrollment
The Sustainability Management degree program at the Schmalkalden University is aimed at students who already have a degree from a university or professional academy and wish to expand their knowledge and career opportunities.
For admission, a completed university, professional academy, or university of applied sciences degree with 210 ECTS points is required. In addition, you must have relevant professional experience of at least one year.
If you have a degree from a relevant dual study program, work experience exceeding 20 hours per week can be credited towards the required professional experience. In addition, graduates with 180 ECTS points from a first degree can obtain the necessary 30 ECTS points through an internship (in their company) accompanying their studies.
Study Contents, Modules, and Specializations
In just 5 semesters of regular study time, you will acquire 90 ECTS credits in social, ecological, legal, and business aspects through this Master's program at the state-run Hochschule Schmalkalden.
The structure of the program is as follows:
- 1st Semester: Fundamentals of sustainability and social responsibility, legal and norm systems for sustainability management, sustainable corporate management and change management
- 2nd Semester: Sustainable procurement and supply chains as well as circular economy, sustainable value creation, sustainability reporting and controlling, and ecological assessment
- 3rd Semester: Elective Area "Sustainable Energy Supply": Electrical energy technology, energy supply design, renewable electrical energies, bio-chemical energies; or Elective Area "Sustainable Economy": Sustainability-oriented quality management, Occupational safety and health management, Sustainability marketing and communication, IT security and compliance, and data protection
- 4th Semester: Social and ecological market economy as well as environmental economics, waste disposal and recycling, Integrated information management, Sustainable innovation management and design thinking
- 5th Semester: Master's Thesis

Presence and Practical Experience
What sets the distance learning program at Hochschule Schmalkalden apart are the intensive on-site sessions and block seminars in Schmalkalden (Thuringia). During these sessions, you can exchange ideas on the learning content with your fellow students and teachers.
Over the course of 5 semesters, you will complete a total of 15-20 (online) on-site sessions. The sessions are organized in a way that allows for easy part-time study - typically taking place over a 3-day period including weekends.
If you have obtained 180 ECTS credits in your initial studies, you can acquire the additional required 30 ECTS through an accompanying internship. For example, you can complete the internship in your own company.
Tuition Fees
At Hochschule Schmalkalden, you pay the tuition fees for the part-time study on a semester basis, always at the beginning of the semester. The tuition fees for the Master's in Sustainability Management amount to 2760,- Euros per semester.
In addition, there are semester fees of approx. 61,- Euros (without a semester ticket) or approx. 135,- Euros (with a semester ticket).
