No Numerus Clausus, Even Without Abitur: Admission to Studies at AKAD University
You will be admitted to the translation studies program at AKAD University if you can provide proof of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate.
Access without a high school diploma or equivalent is possible under the following conditions:
- You have successfully completed a professional development course and hold a certificate as a State-certified business economist, certified accountant, business specialist, specialized merchant, state-certified technician, or master craftsman.
- Or you have completed a vocational training program of at least two years that is relevant to your desired field of study, and have at least three years of professional experience in a related field. If this applies to you, you can take a university qualification exam, which consists of three written exams in German, English, and a subject-specific part, as well as an oral exam.
In addition, you must demonstrate your existing language skills at the beginning of your studies:
- Language skills in German at level C2
- Language skills in English at level B2 and/or
- Language skills in French at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

2 Areas of Study, 2 Language Variants to Choose From
German, English, and French are the 3 languages spoken and written most in Europe in administration and in companies. Use your language skills and further your professional development with this communication science distance learning course from AKAD University.
At the beginning of the studies, you choose between one of these two areas of study:
- Technical Translation
- Business Translation
You choose the specialization in one of these areas according to your career wishes or to match your current profession.
For your area of study, you have 2 language variants to choose from:
- German-English

Study Contents
In the first 4 semesters of this course, you mainly deepen your chosen area of study. At the same time, AKAD University step by step provides you with linguistic and specialized communication basics. You enhance your foreign language skills and acquire key qualifications for studies or profession and in project management.
In the 5th semester of this AKAD distance learning course, you acquire specific translation knowledge; the semester concludes with a project work to prepare you for the bachelor's thesis. You write your bachelor's thesis in the 6th semester.

2 Degrees: Bachelor of Arts and Optionally State-Certified Translator
Do you want to obtain the State-Certified Translator (SGÜ) qualification alongside your bachelor's degree? With the SGÜ qualification, after being sworn in, you are allowed to translate and certify official documents. You can take two additional modules with this course and then, if desired, register for the external examination to become a State-Certified Translator in English or French.
